Just bought a D4 7U serial number and got it home today. I think it will run but the throttle is stuck and it will not go into any gear. Im wondering if something is stuck or if it is just sticky from sitting. I was told it has sat for around 20 years. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Ill try and get some pics as soon as possible. I don't remember the full serial number the hour meter reads 388 i'm not sure if it has been rolled over or not. We just pulled it out of a barn today its been sitting there for 10 plus years. I dont understand why it wont go into any of the gears or why the throttle wont work its probably just gummed up. I tried unhooking the throtte linkage and trying that but its still stuck. I am new to working on these and any information would be great. Thanks Ethan

When you say it won't go into any gear, is it grinding? or the shifter will only move a little bit and then stop? Maybe it has something to do with the transmission interlock? I assume that you are pushing the clutch lever forward? Is it going all the way forward?

A "barn fresh" D4 7U? Before you go any further in trying to bring it back to life, check all compartments for water! Loosen the drain plug(s) for the transmission a couple of turns and see if water drips out. If so, things may have rusted up a bit inside and you may have a bit of a job ahead. Engine; loosen the oil drain plug a bit and see if any water drips out. In any case, drain the oil and remove the inspection covers on the side of the pan. .you may have a cleaning job ahead. Same for the final drives. .loosen the plugs and check for water. Ditto for the steering clutches/brakes. .they should be dry.

Now that that's done, regarding the stuck throttle: stuck rack and or stuck pump plungers would be my first guess. All is not lost. .there should be a couple of threads about unsticking 'em. You'll just have to search for 'em.

Congrats on the "new" D4. .they can be a lot of fun. .and frustration 'til you get it all sorted out.

Nothing seems to have water in it although the grease is like tar. The lever will just move back and forth a little it doesnt want to go into any gear. I haven't had it started yet and wanted to try and pull it to start it. I will have to look up threads on the stuck throttle. Im sure this D4 will run with a little time and tlc. The full serial number is 7U196. Ill will try to post pics as soon as possible. Thanks Ethan

Where are you located? Maybe a local member could help you out. The throttle when in the closed-shut off position, has a notch to keep it there called a detent. Sometimes they get a little stiff. Yard back on it to go passed the detent.-glen

Congrats on the D4 -
I have a D4 6u 12286, a 1957. Too fun...
Seems like your serial number would indicate a VERY early 1947 model. Either that or you missed a couple digits? From the registry -

D4. 7U. 1947 7U1-7U1797
7U 871 Clark Frontin CA. US. elec. Pony fender tank cat 44 hyd. tool bar dozer tool bar rippers
7U 1368 Zack Arbios rope start
7U 1438 Zack Arbios elec. Pony Be Ge hyd. Unit sweed tilt dozer cat rad guard connects to 4yd. Murray carryall
7U 1793 Paul Schnitzer OR. US. elec. Pony fender tank 4A blade full skid pan/pull hook hyster winch

My advice as a new D4 owner - get the manuals, they are all over ebay, etc. A full set, especially the parts manual, operators and engine will run you $50 - $150 depending upon your shopping prowess. If you find a hydraulics one, let me know. Well worth the investment.

Then study 'em - look at the pictures and figue out how this stuff works.
Then study 'em again - makes excellent bathroom reading and your wife will wonder where you're off to and if she should call the doctor..
Then start searching this site for D4 stuff - there's lots of info here. (also makes wonderful bathroom reading if you have a laptop)
Then get a set of bigger wrenches and losts of liquid wrench/PB Blaster; your're gonna need 'em.

Especially important - don't take anything apart till you understand what it does, why it does it and most importantly - how to put it back together.

Welcome aboard the crazy train...
Too many projects... too little time

I would advise NOT trying to pull start the D4 until you get the throttle UNSTUCK. If it starts and over-revs, big and small engine piece-parts could come flying out at you.:jaw:Take the cover off the injection pump housing and see if the rack is moving freely. Like OG said, could be a sticky injection pump plunger holding it up. If that's the case, don't pry on the injector pump, you could screw up the timing on it.

The shifter not moving could be the interlock (as mentioned already) or possibly the shift forks could be rusty. The interlock will keep the shift lever from moving if the clutch lever is engaged, try shifting with clutch lever forward.

Thanks for all the information. I will take pictures of the ID tag to verify the serial number. I think the shifter is just sticky. I did have the clutch engaged when I first tried it so the lock out was part of my problem. The throttle is stuck between fast and slow i dont believe it is stuck at the detent. I will take some pics and post them. so my location is Lemmon South Dakota I'm not sure if there are any members that live nearby. Once again thanks for all the information. Ethan

first address the fuel issue, take inspection plate off and check it... just a thought if you can roll it disengage the clutch(forward) and then try to put it in gear...
if the rack is frozen you may not get any fuel resulting in machine no go vroom-vroom!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
