After the Rock River show last year I inspected my rails because I knew that they were getting bad. What I found was several broken bushings and more that were worn out. I found brand new D2 size rails at a brand X dealer. Glen Shuey is the parts man that I put in contact with. I gave him all the Cat number and he found ones that were the same. $2300and change later I picked up the new rails and as far are a perfect match. I would of had one of them one the D2 today but when I took off the old rails the idler had a lot of slop. I took the idler off and needs new bushings. It could use a new shaft but it is no longer stocked by Cat. (Anybody have a good idler shaft in Chicago). I hope to have the one side on tomorrow,

The D2 should be happy with those new parts. Keep the pictures coming showing your progress!

Nice. Nothing like the piece of mind of new undercarriage. Are you getting rollers and sprocket too?

No rollers or sprockets. they all were at 40 to 50%. I run this cat about 40 to 50 hours a year so they should last a long time. Rail height was at 40% but the pitch was over 100% worn With all the damaged bushing the rest of the undercarriage wouldn't have lasted long.
Thanks

I put new bushings in the idler that took up most of the play (I am looking for a new or slightly used shaft part number to follow) put the rail on, and started to put the pads on but got rained out. I hope to finish the right side tomorrow. Then it is on to the left side.

Have any pictures of the idler shaft? I'd imagine it would be relatively cheap and easy to have one made by a machine shop or someone with machine tooling. If it's just straight rod may be not even need that much. Original may have been hardened, but for hobbyist use I think you'd be fine with just a plain medium carbon steel.

a number of years ago I got the last shaft that caterpillar had listed in their inventory--the story i was told was that all parts are recalled back to Peoria after a certain amount of years and I inquired 2 days before that deadline--the shaft was in Brazil and they shipped it back up to the US and then to my dealer

I like that. Because tanks use a live track system and there are rubber bushings in each track block they normally snake one way or the other when laid out except when brand new. We used to convince new soldier and LT's that when they laid out like that you had to rotate the tracks! We were never mean enough to actually go through with it!

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
