Hello everyone my name's Cory, my first post here and first time owning a piece of Cat equipment. I just purchased a model thirty this week that I've been eyeballing for the past six years or so and things have finally aligned to allow me to buy it from the owner. I haven't seen it for several years but I do remember it turning over last I was there and I do remember the original magneto was missing and had been retrofitted with a Case magneto off of who knows what, the undercarriage on one side was shot and on the other side was fair shape, not really sure how that happens but who knows. I do also remember the serial number contained a PS124 but not sure if there was any more or less to it. What would be the correct mag to put back on it and where might I find one as well as some undercarriage parts and whatever else I may need along the way? Going to look it over and take some pictures this weekend as well as pay the owner for it since we just spoke over the phone about it. Will try to keep you guys posted on progress, I wont be able to retrieve it this weekend though since i'm on call.

I bought an R2 a few years ago (4J970SP) and one track was decent, the other shot. My conclusion was that someone had robbed one good track for another machine (D2 I think) and put the old chain and sprocket from the D2 back on the R2.

Interestingly for a rare machine (only around 1100 each made of the 4J and 6J R2s, we have three consecutive serial numbered machines in preservation here in the UK. Many R2s were converted to Diesel using either D2 engines or gen set engines, so three consecutive serial numbered machine surviving is even more surprising.

Ha ha I'm a bit excited myself I haven't seen the thing for several years now, any particular things to look out for on one of these? I have my eye on what I believe to be the correct mag for it, a Bosch ZR4IS can anyone confirm that is correct?

Wow sir that is quite impressive and for all three of those machines to be in the same hands.

Depending on the year the mag should most likely be an Eisemenn GV4.

If I'm reading the parts book right machines S-4683 to S-6761 and PS-1 to PS-2932 would use a Bosch ZR4 anything
newer would use the Eisemann GV4 and the replacement for the GV-4 was the Eisemann CM-4 or CT-4.

It is however missing the air cleaner and piping except for the elbow on the carb inlet. It does still turn over and has the tube type radiator, the water pump has been frozen at some point and repaired pretty nicely as well as the lower water piping/radiator support. It has the little covers over the tips of the leaf springs on the undercarriage which I read about somewhere and someone has substituted the old fuel tank for a small 90w oil drum but all in all it definitely looks like a good project.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
