I've been thinking about installing a different blade and hydraulic system to my old d2. Mine has a homemade setup that is pretty worn out. My question is which system would be the most correct given its age and of coarse the most effective to work with? I mean if I,m going to do it I want it done right. I,ve seen alot of different setups but know very little about any of them. Any advice would be appreciated.

When the 5J D2 was manfactured ,Caterpillar did not make blades for this model . All of the blades installed on this series were instaled by other blade manfacturers or added by tractor owners .
I have a D2 5J that I added a surprus tractor hydraulic system ,and an odd blade that I picked up yrs ago .

Caterpillar sent most all the tractors at that time ,across the river from Cat to the Laplaine Choat Co. that manfactured blades .At that time Choat intalled rear mounted hydraulic pumps on these tractors .The minus factor is that when you disengage the master clutch ,there is no hydraulics
You maybe able to find a Laplaine choat blade that would fit your tractor or a later D2 5U blade ,but there is going be be some fabercation to mount it .
You will need the blade and trunnion plates that bolt to the roller frames .

Try to stick with the lightest blade you can find. I had a rear mounted pump on my R2 which you get used to, but the blade was way too heavy and it was nose heavy and very difficult to grade with.

Chris,
Why dont you send us a picture of what you have.
You might be better off to refabricate it a bit. There are guys on here who have built dozer setups that are better than factory. For instance there is no feature to tilt the 2S dozer built by Cat.

Also if you don't have the large idlers, it would help to fit some. Also look for the rear weight that was used with the Trackson attachment.

My D2 has a Hyster D2N winch mounted on it so i have enough counter weight to offset the blade. i've thought about the solid idlers as being a good upgrade but not sure how or what would all entail, like longer rail ect.. A freind of mine has a blade on his D2 that has the angle ability and that's what I,m shooting for. It allows him to crown his driveway and like I said the more functionality i can get out of it the better. I know the blade was an add on for these little critters but was wondering if anyone had seen or used a setup that they thought was a better fit or operated easier. I will try to get some photo's of my setup and post them. Not sure how that'll work out. Anyway thank you for the posts.

You can also get a large idler with spokes. All you would need is to add a link or two to the chain + grouser. Yes the D2N is a good counter weight!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
