My Pony is completely played out. Everything is worn, the cam and lifters are pitted. I have a good cam I think in a box somewhere, the crank is ok, but every gasket and moving part/ bearing will need to be replaced. It's a 1944 5J.

I am assuming I have to make my own list of every part and order them separately. True? or is there such a thing as a gasket set or rebuild set?

Will most parts need to be ordered from Cat or will someone else have the majority of the parts I need?

TIA
Charley

When I did the rings, rods, and mains for my pony, I got the parts from Foley Cat in Kanasas. Search for posts by "Timbo1946" . Here is the number 1-620-792-5246 and ask for Mike. He went all outfor me to get my D2 up and running. Told him what I was doing and we figured out what I needed together. Sent all parts directly to my house, usually within a few days. Forgot I didn't put mains in, used what I had.

What it be better than just going to my local Cat dealer?

Doc,
My rebuild started with lost oil pressure on the main engine. Once apart, lower end was out of spec, so started to look for main and rod bearings. I found that they are almost non-existant (Look for other posts by me "timbo1946") Ended up making lots of phone calls to different places without luck. Can't remember how but ended up talking with Mike @ Foley and he was of great help. He ended up having a contact that was able to make the main bearings and that was the way I went. After main was back together, and lots of use of the pony to get it going, the pony gave up on me. Took apart and found that it was as worn out as the main. The rods were just out of spec for clearance, and the mains were at the max. Kind of cheeped out on the pony and put rod bearings and reused the mains, put a set of rings in, cylinders looked and measured OK. Knowing that it was ony going to get limited time on the pony, thats the way I went. Mike was very good at getting me the parts so I continued to work with him. I didn't have a much luck with the local cat dealer, and my after market guy (when I did stearing clutches and brakes) couldn't help with engine bearings. Hope this helps

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
