looking at a 955 with serial 12a4987 on engine, can anyone tell me the age and weight of this machine?

The "CAT" 12A "955" - Serial No 12A 4987 was built in the 1957 production year. there were 2,569 built that year. Production of the 12A finished in 1960 - with a total of 8,418 being produced.

what would yall consider a decent price on this machine? i have heard it run and runs good and supposedly doesnt use no oil, other than that what you see in pictures is all i know about it.

I looked at one up here in Canada, guy asked $3500, I thought it might be a $2000. machine. it was not as good as he one you are looking at undercarriage anyway. It was 12a4897 that's bout all I know bout that

Saw the pictures on YTD. That's a 12A "C" model direct start. Looks to be a good undercarriage. Check the track tension adjuster. Maximum adjustment is 6-1/8" between the front of the engine support and the back of the front idler yoke. If it runs and operates good, $5-7.5k would not be unreasonable.

"C" models used D4 undercarriage.
"E" models used D6 undercarriage. Change was @ s/n 12A5793

Some 6010/11 followed by 7018 should fix that.

if the track is at max adjustment what does that mean? i have never owned or worked on a dozer, would that mean taking out a section or two out of the track to shorten it or something else?
