Hello out there, I've got D69U-9023 (dry clutch) which developed a transmission problem today while opening up a new trail in the bush.
In the process of clearing, I found some soft (wet) ground and became mired while trying to get back to high ground.

In the middle of going back and forth in what became a mudhole, there was suddenly no forward gear, reverse only.
The forward-reverse lever moves in its full travel, and the shaft it is clamped to moves with it.
We removed the tower that bolts to the top of the transmission and can see what looks like a fork attached to the shaft, although could not make out any detail below oil level.

We were able to winch the machine out of the soft ground and drove it in reverse a couple miles back to the shop. The transmission shifts okay through the gears ( 1, 2, 3, 4 )

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what may have happened here?

Thanks.

I am guessing you see the lever on the cross shaft moving as you move the reverser lever forward and backward. I had one that the lever clamp bolt had come loose and the shaft was pivoting in the lever I think. You had to hold the lever hard to the left to get it to shift forward or backward. If you are seeing the lever moving with the shaft, and your reverser lever has minimal side to side movement, I expect you have a broken shift fork.

In any case you would access the mechanism by draining the oil and then disconnecting the interlock linkage and removing the cover on the left side of the transmission. This removes the complete interlock mechanism. Then you can remove the complete shifter fork group by taking out 4 large bolts that hold the two vertical supports. The assembly rotates outward at the top and comes right off. Then you will have access to the lever that is mounted on the reverser shaft as well as the shift fork itself. The forward/reverse fork runs on the bottom rail and is the front most fork at the bottom.

I have those parts in a disassembled transmission if you need them.

I don't remember all the details of which way all shafts turn so I could be way off, but my guess is bearings on the trunnion in front left of transmission.

The gear on trunnion is engaged to reverse the direction of transmission. When you have it apart the trunnion needs to be tight in case. If not it will become impossible to keep cap screws tight that holds trunnion cap to case. Bolts fall out and if tractor turned down hill massive oil leak as bolt wholes are open into transmission.

If you get books the transmission is not that complicated to do for a do it yourself guy. Just a fair bit of sit on track and bend you head into the guts of your tractor.

The reverse idler is the one Ray is talking about I think.

I believe it must be ok since the tractor goes in reverse just fine.

Thanks for the replies ccjersey and Ray54.
It will be a few days before I can get it into the shop and start working on it.

CC, really appreciate the detailed descriptions. I will see what is needed, may get back to you for those parts, thanks.
