I have a Cat D7 - I have found a number on the left side of the engine not sure if this is a serial number but it reads #17A18869 Is this the serial number for engine or dozer? And also what does this # identify my machine as?

That serial number identifies your machine as a Caterpillar D7D manufactured in Peoria, IL in 1961. The number is for the whole machine. John

The engine serial number should be the same as the one on the left rear of the steering clutch housing. Machines of that time had 2 tags with matching numbers. If different numbers, the engine was replaced.

Later models (after early '70's??) had a separate serial number for the engine, but tractor serial number was still tagged on left rear of tractor (and stamped under tag...... if it's missing scrape paint off between the two rivet holes to see number).
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I can not find the serial number of my dozer. Where on engine is it located? It has a winch on the back and I can not see back there, but I am pretty sure the plate is missing

It should be on the left side of the engine near the pony motor engagement levers.

My book shows it to be a 1952 year model

Some later caterpillar machines are divided into obvious series like the D7E 47 and 48A's where the E series is stamped on the serial number plate. The earlier series like the 3T/(4T and 5T military contract machines) did not list the series on the tag but I think they would have been the C series with the 17A being the D series.

On the older machines the main designation is the serial number prefix and size, so D7 3T or D6 9U.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
