Need Help Confirming a Diagnosis for a D6B

Folks,

Several weeks ago, not long after I got my D6B, is started seeing oil leaks underneath the dozer under each clutch/brake compartment.

It was not until yesterday, while adjusting the brakes, that I found oil coming out of the RS clutch/brake compartment. I had removed the support screw completely to clean it before tightening it to hold the brake, when I pulled it out, about a quart of oil poured out behind it.

In addition, I checked the transmission fluid, which was down by about half.

For my understanding--do the transmission and bevel gear compartment share the same oil?

After reviewing the findings, my hypothesis is that the bearing/seal cages on either side of the bevel gear compartment are leaking.

Note that the finals have clean oil in them, with no loss of fluids, they are topped off and have stayed that way during this period.

I am looking for confirmation or disagreement with my hypothesis. If you have other ideas, based on your experience, I am very interested in hearing them.

Folks, I am looking for your expertise in helping narrow down the culprit here.

Maybe the cross shaft seals but i have seen allot of times the bevel gear cover seals leak. There a pain in the ass to get sealed sometimes.

There's no bevel gear 'dome' on a D6, it will be the bevel gear shaft seals weeping.

How bad is it leaking? How much oil are you loosing? Is it worth the cost of the repair on an antique? How many hours are you planning on using it? We used to even find wear metal in oil samples but continue to run the machine till the job was over and we could afford to have it down.

Oldbeek, you ask relevant questions. It is leaking a quart or two an hour, best that I can tell. My suspicion is the bevel gear seals are leaking into the ‘dry’ clutch/ brake compartment. From there the dirty oil is dribbling out the brake support screws.

I’ll keep he tranny filled, while draining the clutch / brake compartment before I use it each time. That will likely be the short-term solution.

It may be an antique to folks on this forum, but it’s a tool that I plan on using every week, so I have no issue sinking $10K+ into solving any issues. I can’t afford a new $300K machine—this is quite inexpensive while getting my work done.

As for a long-term solution, I’ll get a lowboy and drag it to a mechanic this fall before it starts snowing. They can get it into shape before next spring when I have more road and holes to dig. 😉
