Hi Jack,
I don't have a source for bearings but this info might help the search.
I wish folks would share more of their bearing sources as it seems to be a constant scramble........or maybe it's a secret.
On an outside chance try www.regalcorp.com

I have had luck in the past getting engine parts from a local machine shop that does engine rebuilding. They have catalogs full of parts for any engine you can think of. Of course maybe caterpillar has found a way to keep everything to themselves. Good luck.
Of course these bearings are nothing like a normal insert bearing and would have to come from altogether different manufacturing methods, but that's why they lasted 50 years. I think that's two reasons why the regular bearing houses don't have them. I have the local rebuilder working on it now and he's having no luck so far. Different rebuilders use different sources so maybe something will turn up. Your suggestion is a good one but I already have them on it. Thanks.

Gave it a try. That area code is for Washington/mid Columbia area--right across the river from me. I never heard of the outfit. The guy on the other end never heard of it either. I suppose we can pitch that number into the circular file.
We're looking at another option--maybe a good used crank in the bearings that I have instead of a regrind. I'm betting someone rolled a new set of bearings into that engine before they trashed it. The wear in the shells isn't too bad.
Cat wants about $650 for the undersize rod inserts for four rods, close to $700 for standards. I'm avoiding it.
Didn't have a chance to try regalcorp today, may wait. We're prowling Jim's yard for another crank first.
Thanks for suggestions, will keep you posted...
