I got this old gal running but the hydraulic cylinders are leaking and the blade creeps down maybe one inch every five to ten seconds (haven't really measured it). So I inquired at NAPA and they said they could get these rebuilt if I brought them in. Besides packing the rams really need to be rechromed - I cleaned them up as best I could but the hard chrome is shot.

So, any suggestions on whether I should pursue NAPA or someone else?? Last time I inquired about having a radiator repaired for my M-F 255 (fan blade came loose and went into the rad) they inspected it and said they would have it repaired but wouldn't guarantee it! They quoted me a price for a replacement that was more than I could have purchased one off fleabay. Trouble is, they are the only local shop since I live in a small town.

I just had a local hydraulic shop rebuild the cylinders on one of my D2s with a 2S blade. They cut off the rods, welded in new ones, and put in all new seals. No leaks and no seeping afterwords. As I recall, it was around $550.

See if you can get a quote first.
Pre-chromed rod is available and much cheaper and less hassle than going through the prep and plating process. Will involve some machining on the piston end but I'd recommend that as the way to go.

Try these guys. They are local to me and saved me a bunch-o-money on an Allis Chalmers I did years ago.

Never hurts to get a phone quote.

If the rod is welded to the eye, I would replace the rod via welding, if it was a Cat rod (as in forged one piece ) I would have it re-chromed. I had my D2 rods chromed about 10 -12 years ago and it cost less than $250, prob less than the rod material and machine labor and way nicer job. Now out in CA, the environmental watch dogs love the platers, but not so bad here in SC I guess. The seals are simple to replace yourself & don't cost that much. I also enjoy the "do it your self" mode, that's how I learn about my machine. The last thing I would do is take it to a hyd shop & leave my wallet.

I recall a former member who took his D2 cylinders to Cat for rebuilding and got a bill for $3,500.....

I am a can-do guy, and don't mind getting my hands dirty. I could do the re-pack. Is the only source for packing the Caterpillar dealer? I believe these are original CAT cylinders, but need to inspect to see if there are any part numbers to reference. I have dabbled with zinc plating, but obviously, the RAMs would have to be sent out for rechroming. I couldn't imagine spending $3500 tho, that's more than I paid for the Cat!

Thanks for the advice, I guess I will take it slow and easy and contact some of the rebuilders that you guys suggested, and get a quote from NAPA.

I am with Kelly on this. That doesn't look like a Cat blade or ram to me.The old rams were very generic so hope for the best, that some packing can be found that is cheap and will work.

Well 4d2Ken, after giving that old dozer a closer look, I’m inclined to believe its shop built and patterned after an old Gar Wood bulldozer. Maybe a RB-D model, there were about 7.5’ wide and 30.0ā€ high and with the cyl's in about the same location. That would be my guess and that what I’m doing. I as well, hope you find what you need in the way of parts. Seems like most Can-Do guys and can getter done, good luck.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
