Hi Guys
I've been combining two D8L winches into one and am need of a brake band. I have three spare winches and none have brake bands! The part number is 46448AC right out of the hyster book Form 709D. i tried General Gear no luck. I know that Allied now owns hyster winch, but haven't had much luck there either. If I could find a band close to the right size I could make the ends to attach to the band. i'm sure the band is some sort of spring steel. I have taken a lot of pics and plan to post soon. One had the mounting ears broke off and the other had the drum completely worn through. Logging is sure tough on these old machines. This is all so I can finally drag #1 D8 up the hill to repair the broken piston and whatever else it broke. Good thing is both cats should be running and usefull without steeling parts off one to make the other keep going.
More later

Shouldn't be that difficult to get something duplicated if you have enough pieces for a pattern....plus your up there in winch country.
Parts, new and used are kinda hard to come by and buying whole winches for parts ends up with more junk than usable.

Hi LeRoy,
just to be silly I looked in my Hyster Winch Book D7N S/NoVW-3971-up, and, lo and behold, it uses the same 46448AC band also, so this may widen your horizons to locate a band.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Your in there deep . Sorry I cant help you on the band . I have a 2u with the same winch . I pulled the plug and 6 gallons of water came out . I filled it with trany fluid to soak till its turn comes for a new life. Was it much trouble to tear down? Tim

Besides General Gear in Boise ID, I've had good luck scrounging parts from Phillips Tractor in Gaston OR 503-662-3929 and NW Tractor in Boring OR 503-658-5545.

Hey Eddie.. yesterday my brother was checking out the latest junk at Hansens Truck stop and found two D7's he thought the brake bands looked the same and you just confirmed it. Thanks. Now I know where I'll get the band and the line since the also sell wire rope. There is also a fairlead on one of them that may fit.

These winches come apart really easy. Unlike Cat there is no super press fits on anything and all the bearing slide right off. Putting it together is a little tougher since many of the fits have to match at the same time (drum bearings) and can be really frustrating. Everything is heavy making a forklift or excavator a must.

Old magnet, you are right about parts winches. Usually they've been laying upside down and full of water.. not to mention just beat and abused in every way. This is logging country so nothing lived an easy life.

I did get mine painted last night even though the power went out half way through. Finished with a flashlight and ran down to about 5psi air. Now I'm off to install it in the rain so I can drag D8 #1 up the hill to open our back road out. Lots of rain has caused the river to flood making that road pretty important to get out.

The pics of the old winch is one I got for free....there's a reason they're free. I think that one came off a 2U judging by the inner bolt circle. The painted one is the combo of two winches and a lot of TLC. Note the diamond plate covering huge dents in the case. So deep the bull gear rubbed almost all the way through the case!
i'll post pics after I get it mounted.

Here's some pics of #2 D8 dragging home #1 d8. Got the winch mounted using studs I machined since the cheapest I could find were $115 each. This is the first time #2 d8 has been used to do any work since it would not stay in gear before(that fix is another story). It was a struggle to get it up the hill, but we got it. Got a bull line and top roller coming today for #2. Got my kid on #1 to pull the steering clutches and hold the brakes when needed. He's taken an interest in this old iron and wants to be part of our small business. Quite a step up from livin on the street and doing who knows what. Not many his age even know what a pony motor is. Next up is to tear down #1 to find out why it chucked out a piece of a piston.

I have the same D8L Hyster drum on my 2U. The cat is stored inside and not left out in the rain and every summer when it is used, I drain a cup of water out of the lower drain hole. It is part of the check list like making sure there is water in the radiator.Maybe if I hung the cat by the bulline, in the shop, I could drain the winch water into the radiator. The air is kinda wet here in the NW.
