I “borrowed” the cover from my freebie for you D2; I couldn’t help notice all of the stray chunks in the bowels of this poor old thing. I don’t seem to see where all of the broken bits came from. I will remove everything with a magnet and look harder with a bright light. It came to me for parts and will likely be a parts machine.
Gee- looks like someone might have heard some noise from the looks of the bottom of that case. Those "chunks" look pretty heavy, more like a gear went south! Bearing cage or casting broken? Pictures and let us know what you discover.
PTO shaft coupling blew apart because previous owner didn't have an overrun clutch when connected to a brush hog that stopped abruptly ?
Side-seat: I do not believe that this D2 had a PTO at any given time. The mention of an override clutch is a very good statement, as some folks have wanted to use their machines for pulling choppers, etc. there could be terrible damage without one. I might open it up and take a peek some more, as the presence of metal is disturbing. It steers and rolls without issue. So far it has been great as a parts machine. JM
Unless I’m very mistaken, and I could be: shouldn’t there be pinion gear on the end of that shaft coming out into the case?
Or is that just a PTO shaft, and it looks higher because of the camera angle.
You're looking at the PTO shaft. The pinion is obscured by the crown wheel
Fish out the bits and you have a jigsaw puzzle to entertain yourself for Christmas.
WF: I was thinking the same thing. Seeing how poor things can be, I can entertain myself for hours doing that. I might scrounge up a few dollars and buy an extension mirror and a light to look further inside. I am always intrigued by things broken, especially when it was not by me!
I might end up borrowing more parts from this hulk to do a cheap fix on another D2 that has sadly lost the ability to steer, thanks to swollen disks.

Those "swollen" discs in the steering clutches seem to be a very common issue with D2's. I have seen them so bad, a "hot wrench" was the only way to get the springs released and then often they would not separate. The old malady of the drums being so worn they would not come off the plates was another issue. - Have fun JM, keep you out of the doldrums of this tule fog and wet weather we have been having. - CTS
