So, my wife's uncle had to remove a 12' tall Cardone cactus from his yard in downtown San Jose.

I used a come-a-long attached to the hitch on my truck to let it down. The family rallied to help me get it onto my trailer.

I made the Journey back to Southern CA easy and made what I needed to hoist the spikey beast. I was pretty worried about the dangers involved, but took it slow and everything went smooth.

Everything went so well that I moved a bunch of palm trees on my property that were growing to close to power lines. I used a combination of Auger, loader and hand work to dig them out. I used the draw bar to pull the tree to it's new hole and just tipped them up with the cactus crane.

We couldn't resist a little fun while were working.

fantastic stuff could be a real prick of a job LOL

I find when lifting anything thats a long way out the front things work a lot better when the jib is mounted in the center as the machine is lot more stable but I reckon you have it well in hand

Great job. Innovation and thinking outside the box. Some serious ambition to.

I really did mean to center it. I built the mount to straddle the giant pin for the blade. My one moment of inattention prohibited centerfication facilitation. I measured the blade linkage off to the side where I ended up mounting the cactus crane, not where I Intended to mount it. The center section is just slightly thicker. I had already made the mount at my shop before double checking. Honestly I'd like to rethink my mount so I can mount the crane with the blade in place anyway.

Excuse my ignorance. How long does it take for a cactus like that to grow?
They take years to grow 6 inches in the U.K.

Cardon is native to Baja. They are similar to the seguaro cactus found in Arizona. Cardons are the worlds largest cactus.

Although the climate where I am is similar, it is still different enough that I doubt it will ever be a record breaker.

Pete, we all agree that the cactus will do better where I am. However, my wife's uncle is a cactus master. In the first picture of the thread you can see a couple of his green houses. There are more green houses you can't see and they are all full of rare cactus.

The cardon was growing 1 foot a year. He accidentally planted it under power lines. He cut the top off in hopes that it would branch out from the bottom. It just branched at the top imediatly with the boobs. It just had to move.

That was quite a project, I've seen palms transplanted and held in place with guy wires until the roots will support , never seen a cactus though. How long do you think it will need support? It doesn't have much of a root ball.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
