I got bored today, so I decided to tear into one of the D4s that I originally purchased as a parts tractor. The main runs real nice, as I had got it running awhile back before transplanting the pony over to FrankenCrawler#1. This one, #30,591? Has definitely stuck steering clutches, as well as the right side has issues; it is locked up. Any wagers on what is wrong with it?
I always like a challenge, so I'm going to dig deep into the bowels of this one and make a usable tractor out of it. I can graft another pony onto it from one that is a real parts tractor, or drop a 24v starter in this one, as it already has the hole bored in the flywheel housing.
I am happy to say that this is the first D4 I have had the opportunity to work on with a two piece top cover.
I am also debating whether or not to keep it as an orchard model with PTO, or make it into another top seat.
Wish me luck people! JM

You won't need any luck, you know what you are doing. It's nice to see you making a runner out of a parts tractor and if it has a split deck and a factory hole punched in for a direct start, you will be investing in a better tractor when it is completed. I purchased a 12 volt starter from OM last year and a single wire alternator from Florin and will be installing them this winter and keeping the pony too. I will use the pony for cold starts and the direct for warm starts. Fortunately my 7U was factory punched out for direct start too.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Thanks for the encouragement PasoBob. I tinkered with it today in between phone calls; I can't believe that it was stuck brakes on the right side. Brakes are complete toast, as breaking them loose I ended up knocking them loose from the bands. I was expecting a worse case scenario of a bad final drive or broken bevel gear shaft. Diss assembly on this one isn't too bad yet. Very glad to know that the 3rd parts tractor has steering that works; so to be a cheat, I'm probably just going to swap a compete cross shaft bevel gear clutch pack from one to the other. Donor #3 tractor is #16,406; I should make sure that it will swap straight across without issues. Excellent point/idea about the DE start; I have a good pony I can use, but nice to have best of both worlds. JM

Glen, I don't drink coffee, but I would have spit it up with that post if I did!

Hi, Juiceman.
I'm with Paso Bob. You won't need luck to get it to being a runner again as you have all the knowledge and skill needed to achieve that. Maybe a little luck with some things that go easy wouldn't go astray though. Hope you get that.

Will we be seeing it plowing at SM next year?

A kew-ree-yuss mind would like to know.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Its nice to work on something that was meant to be repairable. No knowledge here, learn as I go tinkering on iron. My biggest issue is when I tear into more than one, and the parts pile gets shifted around. I will most likely bring some tillage tractors again to SM. As an added bonus for the guys, I have been lucky to encounter a group of college girls that love to eat dirt; they suggested I provide tractors so they may have competitions working with the ground engagement tools. I have witnessed some of their operating skills, and wished I could adopt them. They can put many of us to shame.
If I start posting pics of myself wearing a white lab coat, you all know I've probably gone mad. JM:heh:

Hi, Glen.
Good one, M8. Have you been raiding Juiceman's family al-bum? LOL.

Hi, Juiceman.
If some of those young ladies want to come down to SM next year to help set up, I don't think their help would be rejected, nor their participation in the show itself. What MIGHT be a problem is some of the young males around the joint starting drooling and knuckle-dragging in their company.and thus being rendered useless for any 'acksull' work.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas:I had a difficult time focusing on the matter at hand; I didn't know what I liked better: me being a dirty old man leering at college age girls wearing big smiles and what I will call appropriate summer wear I.e., tank tops, running bras and very short shorts running my D5 98J, or the sights sounds and smell of my tractor cruising along in 5th gear turning dirt. If they show up for SM, I might have to put up a sign to keep away or better yet, looking is okay, but do not touch......:decision:

Hi, Juiceman.
If they are real country girls, fully equipped with genuine country girl skills, I suspect they might well be capable of looking after themselves. I don't think it would be the girls that we would have to keep an eye on but rather dis-TRACT-ed males not paying attention to what they are doing and where and how they are doing it.

I can imagine the scene - a Cat diesel crawler pulling a cultivator of some sort with the smells of diesel smoke and fresh-turned earth in a scenic setting - - - with some of the best 'scenery' piloting the crawler. HEAVEN.

Just my 0.02.
