Its says 30 wt in the book. Can it be any 30 weight and could it be 5w-30 or 10w-30? Is Rotella ok? Thanks.

I was under the impression that you run 15-40 in everything on the 933 but will have to research a little more to be 100%. Have to see if my operators manual is in the shop or at home. Jason

Some on here use the 15-40 in the engine they say and the older weights were 30 HD Series 3 in the engine and oil clutch (same as engine) and the trans. and finals used the 80-90 gear oil.Rotella oil is a very good oil as when I was working yet many truckers used the Rotella in their diesel over the road diesel trucks.

The oil required for the diesel 933, and all diesel Cats engines, is one that meets API diesel specifications.

API ratings commence with a "C" for diesel oils, and an "S" for gasoline oils. Diesel oils require a much higher level of detergent in the oil to cope with the increased carbon and other pollutants of diesel fuel.

"Series 3" oil classification was current in the 1950's and 1960's, but is now an obsolete classification. Oils are continually being upgraded and improved, as new and better additives are found .. and the API produce new oil classifications every few years .. and make many previous classifications obsolete when the new categories appear.

Multi-grade oils such as 15W-40 are designed to handle a wider variation of temperatures than "single grade" oils. They are entirely suitable for all Cat diesels. The following API chart will give you much information about oil classification. Diesel oil categories CD, CE, CF & CH-4 are suitable for older Cat diesels .. but I would avoid using CI-4 or CJ-4 rated oils, as the former is specifically designed for late model engines using Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and the latter is designed for current, low pollution level, low-sulfur fuel engines.

These "current rating" oils often have very high levels of detergents that are designed to cope with the vastly increased pollutant loads being forced into the oil, by current engine pollution controls.

If you change from an older rating of oil you have been using, to a current rating, there is every chance your engine will develop leaks and start to burn oil, as the high detergent levels strip out beneficial carbon buildup around piston rings and seals.

hello,
Cat has and still does recommend a straight 30 or 40wt. deo for their pc engines such as your 933.Their newer di engines can use 10-30 or 15-40wt oil.Rottela 30 will be fine.
Good luck Bob

Mite want to read up on the last few posts of this topic.....these oil reformulations are not favorable to the old engines.

So I am not going to be able to find oil with the old rating and the new oil is going to make my engine use oil and leak oil? So it sounds like no oil is suitable?

You should be able to find plenty of oil being sold with CD, CE, CF and CH-4 classifications. Just because an oil classification is labelled "obsolete" by API, doesn't mean to say that oil manufacturers aren't still using those classifications.
You will no doubt find, many drums labelled with stickers or text stating they meet some or all of these classifications.

I have been using Kendall Super D3 sae 30 oil, CF/SL in my machines for the last 20 years and have had no problems

The biggest change inbetween CI, CJ oils and previous oils is the reduction of ZDDP (zinc). ZDDP reduces mainly camshaft and tappet wear. Since most cams are now roller cam and have much less friction flat tappet cams the need for ZDDP has been reduced. Also the zinc poisions the catalist inside the diesel particulate filter causing early failures.

I run 15-40 in my farm equipment (1950's tractors) and will be running it in my D4.
