Cat skid-steer "B" series models are powered by the following ..
Perkins .. 216, 232, 226, 242, 247, 257 ..
Mitsubishi .. 236, 252, 267, 246, 248, 262, 268, 277, 287 ..
There's nothing wrong with either brand of engine. The 3044 is a 3.3L Mitsubishi with Cat decals. Cat own a large shareholding in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and have been in bed with Mitsubishi since they commenced a Joint Venture in Japan in 1963.
Since it is against Japanese law for any company operating in Japan to be majority-foreign owned, Caterpillar use JV's operating under different company names to work with Mitsubishi, manufacturing in JV factories, and in partnership in dealerships, and distribution arrangements.
Cat and Mitsubishi share design ideas, Mitsubishi build Cat products in JV-owned factories, Mitsubishi supply components to Cat under subcontract.
The tie-up between Cat and Mitsubishi, in their JV's, is intense, and far-reaching.
Some people have been writing up BS on forums about Cat owning 61% of Mitsubishi, and they claim Cat saved Mitsubishi's a$$. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mitsubishi is one of the 5 original great Trading Houses of Japan that have been in existence since the 17th century, and in fact is the largest of those Trading Houses .. and Cat probably owe more to Mitsubishi than Mitsubishi owe to Cat .. because without Mitsubishi, Cat would never have even got a foot in the door, into manufacturing and trading in Japan, and S.E. Asia.
The Mitsubishi Trading House encompasses Banking, Trading, Manufacturing, Investment, Mining, Oil & Gas, Shipping, Transportation, Defence & Space Industries, Industrial Chemicals, Food, Textiles, and General Merchandise. The Mitsubishi Group is huge, and when you speak of Mitsubishi, you could speak of any one of the 6 main divisions, and probably 20 different arms of the Mitsubishi Corporation. They are into everything, and are enormously wealthy. Not many people realise that Mitsubishi Corporation own Isuzu .. as well as Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
They aren't are wealthy as they once were, because of the Asian economic bubble of 1997 .. but they are still very wealthy and a force to be reckoned with.
Mitsubishi's manufacturing divisions .. be they car, truck, earthmover, engineering plant, household whitegoods, or any one of a hundred other manufactured products .. are but only a part of the Mitsubishi Corporation giant. In general, most of their products are quite satisfactory, and you will rarely hear of any major problems with Mitsubishi diesel engines.

As regards Perkins .. the answer is more straightforward. Cat own Perkins 100%, and have done, since they purchased the entire company in 1997.
