I've got a job coming up where we are replacing the rudder steering hydraulics on a river tug boat. They currently use two Cat model 44 hydraulic units #8w5820 coupled to 10hp electric motors. They have the double valves, one controls the back rudder, one controls the front. They only use one unit at a time and have the other as backup. I was online looking for information on these old units and I can't come up with what they were originally off of. I found that the D2 used a 25gpm unit and the tag on these says 9gpm. Anybody ever seen a 9gpm model 44?

Kinda crazy to see something so old still in everyday service. I want to look into when the boat was built to see if they were put on new or if they had a previous life on a machine somewhere.

On tractor applications they generally came with 25 and 37gpm pumps.
Never have heard of flow as low as 9 gpm. They do use "Vickers" pump cartridges so they may of had one with that flow option.

I'm curious if Cat supplied these units for special applications like this, or if they were ordered out of the parts book, or if they were taken off an old machine. If there are no machine applications with a 9gpm pump, I guess maybe Cat supplied them. The boat has cat engines and gen sets too. I'm supposed to go look at it this week. I'll have to poke around a little bit.

I'll get some pictures. I'm not sure what the name of the boat is, I haven't seen it yet. It's in Hermann MO now.

I used to see tow boats set up like that in Louisana back in 1958. That seemed to be the standard steer set up back then. The boat in Hermann must be that old. What engines does it have?? Bill Walter ,Parkville, MO.

All I have is the hydraulic unit info right now. I'll try to post some pictures when I go look at it this week. Interesting that this is a "common" set up, but I guess if Cat was supplying the engines it makes sense. I don't know the age of the boat yet, It's being rebuilt now, so I know its been around a while.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
