Hi guys.
I'm a retired marine engineer who has obtained an old D4 Cat. It has been sitting for at least 10 years outside on the Pacific Coast. The pony spins well.I removed the magneto and cleaned it out but missed marking the 2 gears- rotor and magnet. Could anyone please help.
Thankyou.

The red dot or punch mark on the magnet rotor gear should be in the up position and align with the "A" mark on the distributor gear.

Tough to find a good picture, here's all that I could find:

My gear has only a slot that lines up with the key-way. If I line that up with the "A" on the rotor gear, I get a good spark. I also talked to Standard Magneto who agreed. Now if I follow my manual and Bruce's instructions and line up the "A" with the line on the points plate, the "M" on the main gear is one tooth out. I'll try both ways. This is all an adventure. Nice to have you guys to lean on!

Did you check the back side of the gear for a timing mark? If there is no mark then the key slot would probably be correct.

If you had the breaker plate off and points assembly as well you will have to reset the edge distance with the 0.068 in. gauge through the small cover plate on the bottom of the mag. This will require rotating the entire breaker plate assembly and may bring all the timing marks back into alignment.

Thankz again O.M. I was wondering what that little brass cover plate was for. My manual refers to an Eisemann mag which has a hole in the shaft which the Bosch doesn't. At any rate I set the mag to where I can just rotate it within 1 tooth to get a spark and installed it with the engine at the "MAG" mark and it runs. As the machine is still in the bush and not at my house, I will proceed with getting it all running. When (if) I get it home I will be doing a big restoration job on it.
