I reciently posted about possibly buying an d4 but wanted to figure out why the radiator is bubbeling up. After reading numerous posts I built a pressure tester and began testing cyls. Pulling the 3rd cyl injector nut the Pre.com. Started unscrewing same with 4th. I drained the coolant and was sure I found the problem (one of copper rings wasn't even in the pre com but pinched off to the side . I ordered the new o rings and copper rings cleaned and reinstalled the two loose pre coms. Then refilled ran then ... Still leaking into radiator! I pressure tested all cyls. (For 30 sec. or so) And they all hold. I am pretty lost know are there any suggestions? I read the water pump can suck air, is this at all likely if so how can you test.

BTY the symptoms can happen at any RPM but faster with more RPM. The coolant level rises untill it bubbles over and then frothy bubbles come up. No noticeable odor of exhaust.
Thanks.

It could be several things like a bad head gasket, a low liner or cracked head. Could be the seat damaged where the chamber wasn,t being sealed by the copper gasket. You may end up taking the head off and going through things step by step.

was the radiator pressure tested? I had a radiator that showed no signs of leaking but would foam up and push out of the radiator. Took the radiator in to get it tested and it was all pin holes. Ended up getting a new core.

When the head on my D4C was cracked the coolant had many tiny bubbles come to the surface not big bubbles and didn't push coolant out. Got a reconditioned head from Cat 1500.00 ouch Charlie

My RD4 does that too when I'm working her hard, but I know I've got a combustion related problem because the water goes black in an hour or two of working. Is your radiator water clear, or black?

When you pressurize a cyl do bubbles appear in the radiator?

It starts rising and bubbling soon after starting. 30sec to a min. I dumps a half a quart or so every couple min. The coolant is not black or have any distinguishable smell or exhaust. No bubbles when pressure testing cyls.

On Sunday I am planning on starting it until it bubbles. Stop engine, remove fan belt, restart and see what happens. If no bubbles I assume I have a rad. Or water pump problem. If I still do have bubbles it should be in the engine. Of course watch temp.

Thanks for the help
