I just ordered a baldwin filter f919-c from adiesel.com which is listed as a direct replacement for cat filter 2a5886. this is a sock type filter, I searched Baldwins filter catalog based on size. also the metal jacketed filter number pt9198 will also fit based on dimension. the sock filter is under ten dollars and the metal jacketed on is 30.24 . the cat filter i took out was metal jacketed but I am going to try the sock one. has anyone tried the sock type in their system?

The funny part is that most people don't know 44's have a filters. But I know all the different 44 pump series have somthing different from one to another whether it's a spring or the pump it self. What series is your's?

The early #44's used the sock type filter same as for fuel.......but unless you have the parts that go with the sock type unit it will not work as a replacement for the later cartridge type.

ok I was looking at the wrong parts page. the 7f7238 filter is what I need. The one I pulled out measures 2" od 8" long 5/8 id using baldwins website under search by size, liquid element about 6 filter showed up. they were all at least as much as cat wanted or more except for pt9198 which has 14 psi bypass valve inside and is 30.00. that is the one I ordered.
is the bypass valve going to be a issue. should I remove it? just pay cats price for a replacement?
How does something so simple get so screwed up?

The old Baldwin number was a 8358 but it has long been out of production.
Be interested (along with a lot of other folks) in how the 9198 works out. Do they tell you the micron rating? Is it the perforated metal type cartridge?

Don't think it matters if you have the bypass valve or not. This is a bypass flow system that only handles a small percentage of flow.

the picture on the Baldwin website shows a perforated metal jacket http://catalog.baldwinfilter.com/startoffhighwayapps.html
this is the web page
the top of the filter looks a little proud, I hope it works, but since the flow thru it is partial once it is put in there is no way to know for sure?
anyway the good part is the entire piping system was removed and drained of water contaminated oil. the used hydraulic cylinders I picked up this summer in Pennsyvania are installed. their rods were a lot better than mine. the rear three ring leather seals looked good so I just replaced the front packing and seal. My old ones had the two ring rear seal with the pressure release in the rod. there were no remant pieces in mine when I took them apart. absoulutely no seals at all , and it sort of worked a little. amazing! If the leather ones dont hold up I will take them apart again and put new ones in. does anyone know how much material can be removed from inside the cans before they are unusable? mine have some pits.they should be honed out to remove the pits. greg

I looked up the 9198 filter and the dimensions are close but I don't know about that extended neck at the top. I don't remember what the sealing area looks like in the #44 other than being flat. Worth a try to get one in hand and check it out.

I have never seen a spec for the bore wear on the cylinders....guess you can go until you can no longer retain the seals. I have had to add backup rings (shims) to retain the seals in the two cup seal models even when the cylinders are in good shape with little wear.
