Hello mates,

FCGH finally has it's first real Cat to play with. I'm an active member of the IGHB, the Interest Group for Historical Construction Equipment. We are a self-supported bunch of guys with the passion and aim to restore and preserve old trucks and construction equipment anmd such related material. There is also an website of us, www.ighb.de - but sorry, it's all in German. If you have any questions, I will do my very best.

A contractor donated us our first Caterpillar, it's an D6 9U based pipelayer. The machine is in poor outer appearance, with a lot of rust and the operators seat is missing. But the undercarriage has alot of live left in it as it is an pipelayer. For some piccies please visit: http://forum.bauforum24.biz/forum/index.php?showtopic=22316&hl=neuzugang

We checked out the injection pump and the valves. A regulator bar in the pump and one outlet-vavle were slightly blocked, but despite from that, the engine appeared to be in a good shape. Since the magneto of the pony engine is missing, we had to use an Mercedes 4x4 truck to get the Diesel running.

And can tell you what! A large amount of moss was shot out of the exhaust pipe. Aside from this, the Diesel started well and quick, with a nice roary sound and few smoke.

Who can tell me

1. what kind of magneto was built into the D6 9U? A part number would be great
2. where could I get a magneto as a spare part?
3. We are still wondering about the Horse Power - I've found sources that tell us either 76 belt HP or 95 belt HP
4. The SN of the machine is 9U19278 - what year of assamly this would mean? We're just guessing...maybe 1953 or 1954?
5. Whats the tractors weight - and how much it can lift?

Any informations or hints are appreaciated,

thank you for looking in,

Max

By your serial number the mag would be American Bosch
Cat # 7F9937........By AB a number MJK 4/2 360 C or D 408
This is an impulse coupling type.
Do you have the mag drive gear? Pt # 6F4616
Hp was at 90 brake hp by that sr. no.
My literature shows 1955 model.
Basic tractor operating weight is 17,730 lbs but that is for standard tractor.
I don't have specific details on the pipelayer.

Nice find😄 😄

thank you for the good replies,

sorry - I'm late with my respond. I've made a quote on that machine for any further informations at our local CAT dealer Zeppelin. Thy are quite busy in the moment, but will try to help us as good as they can.

Gemdozer, as the Zeppelin dealer told me, they can see that the part number belongs to a mafneto - and for the moment, that's all they can tell me. Thank you for your offer, I've sent you a PN.

Jeff, also thank you for offering me a copy of that spec sheet, I've set you my email address...oh, wait a minute! Did you ask me for my postal address? As I live in Germany, a scanned copy will save money!

SJ, these are great informations, thank you. we have to check if the magneto gear is missing, too. The part numbers you named me are very helpfull.
I know belt HP, drawbar HP, British HP - but how do you define brake HP?

We also noticed that the thermostat doesn't open the valve in the cooling system. Any ideas on this one?

i will try to post some more pictures of the machine, but I still have to learn how to use GIMP....

thank you for the affords,

Max

Brake horsepower (bhp)

Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components. Thus the prefix "brake" refers to where the power is measured: at the engine's output shaft, as on an engine dynamometer. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. An engine would have to be retested to obtain a rating in another system. The term "brake" refers to the original use of a band brake to measure torque during the test (which is multiplied by the engine RPM and a scaling constant to give horsepower).

Brake Horsepower is the system used when setting up the fuel rack adjustments as stated in the Cat Rack Setting Charts.

Nominal hp:
Drawbar....75
Belt..........85

The thermostats can be dismantled for cleaning and should be checked for opening temperatures by placing them in a pan of water along with a known thermometer and heated on a stove or similar.
Should open at 166 - 170 Deg. F. and be full open @ 183 Deg. F.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
