I am getting ready to replace the track chain on my excavator and was hoping to replace it with a split link master link, to avoid the fun of beating the pins in but I was told by the salesman that they only use the split link masters in dozers and not excavators. I can’t think of any good reason why. Does anyone out there know why they don’t use split links on excavators?
Because of the twisting and turning stresses the split link would not stay tight.
As Rome says, an excavator puts different pressure and stresses on tracks compared to a tractor, as a result the split links don't cope well. There is not a lot of pounding pins from my experience, the interference fit is not that big and many excavator master pins also have locking pins to make the fitment easier.
