There is no need for model releases since these photos are for journalistic purposes (if we used them in advertisements, for example, then we would need releases because that would be a “commercial purpose”).
As far as photo requirements, ideally images should be as large of dimensions as possible. For example: if a photo is 1500pixels by 1800pixels, we could make that image 5” by 6” in print – simply divide the number of pixels by 300 and that will tell you how big the photo can be reprinted. 300 refers to the Dots Per Inch or DPI that is required in print publications.
I had received the above information when I submitted an article for the magazine. I hope this helps and inspires others to contribute. -- cts
Thanks CTS! This is good information. Also, I know that a lot of times members may think that there are always a number of "special" machines or projects going on that the magazine is particularly interested in publishing. Here's the real deal: YOUR machine, story, project, is that "special" thing we are interested in publishing!
Many of our members are not swinging wrenches and pulling levers any more, but they sure like seeing what you are up to and seeing Cats in action, or reading a story about anything Cat.
Another thing that may hold some back, is the writing part, we can help there too, you provide the story and some photos, we do the rest.
Throw a "I'm in" in the comments and we can go from there.
Kurt & all readers - I was very hesitant to attempt the article I wrote. The easy part was the writing and providing the photographs to go with it. The HARD part - getting it started and completing it. The help I received from the "team" from the editor to the publisher was without question, the icing on the cake. Their understanding and knowledge to guide me through the process allowed completion. As Kurt stated - there are those available to help. The late Paul Harvey's "REST OF THE STORY" is up to you - there is no story if you do not tell it. Kurt speaks of us that can no longer pull the levers, work the machines or turn the wrenches for one reason or another. Many of the processes/work we accomplished in days past will never be repeated. Only WE can tell the story and provide the insight of what it was and how Caterpillar's influenced our lives. Please - TELL THE STORY! --- cts
