Finally, I am worthy of the new site. Testing Type Fonts and COLOURS(colors)๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜› :: ๐Ÿ˜Š Smiles too..Very cool.

My D25J is getting closer to firing up, but snow has arrived here unfortunately, slowly me down a bit. Par for the course here i guess๐Ÿ˜ž . Snow pic to follow tomorrow.

Hi there,
Sharp eyes!๐Ÿ˜ฎ
This is how I bought it and is pictured just before picking it up. Never noticed the tracks backwards.๐Ÿ˜ฎ They also seem very deep. Are they just in great shape because not many other D2's i see have such aggressive tracks?๐Ÿ˜•
The bumper is a mystery too.
I will take some more detailed pics but it seems original, but I'm no expert. Old Magnet so far seems like a wealth of info on these critters will probably know if it is an O.E. item. The main bumper supports are strangly just flat bar (vertically placed) and run back along each side the main eng. and bolt up near the cockpit area. Not very strong. Front gussets from bumper bar look real Cat quality. Not sure??๐Ÿ˜•
Note exhaust stack coming out of air cleaner..nice!

Nice little tractor. The grousers may have been welded up. I like the front bumper and radiator guard, but the structure doesn't look sturdy enough to be Cat. But I don't know. GWH

Thanks GWH,
I'm learning new stuff everyday. I'll check grousers-welding? Rad grille also has tabs welded on -maybe for blade cables/pulleys? not sure. Will post better pics later today. She seems in pretty decent shape. Hope i look that good when i'm 60 plus!

Could be Cat, they made quite a variety of grill guards and bumpers. Some more pictures would help with the identification.

Old Magnet,

here are some detail shots... can you tell where ! live? (White stuff already)
Flimzy 3/8"flat bar runs back all by itself and is welded to tractor but there are factory holes on bar to mate with threaded holes on tractor that could have been used.
Thanks for your help once again. You sure know your Cats.๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Ken,
I believe that is a variation of Cat original Guard and bumper. Both were offered for the D2 models. The mounting clips and patch repair not included. 3/8 plate was used for heavy duty side plates. I don't have much info on the actual D2 application and can't seem to find my 5J parts manual if it is in there. As near as I can make out it resembles the background picture in the attachments brochure.

Those are ice pads, they may have more agressive grousers. They look in good shape. Got any detail shots of the rails. They are definately on backwards. I like the shine on them, you have obviously been getting some work out of her.

Thanks guys,

OM, My bumper and grille is exactly the same as the guy in the black and white pic in the brochure. It has the same oval hole in the bumper for a handcrank to start a gas engine maybe? (you'd have to be popeye to try and hand crank a diesel! ) I'm missing the upper vertical flat bar supports i see pictured in the brochure. It all makes sense. They couldn't fit angle profiles, so they doubled up on flat bar for strength.
8C 361,
Good news on the Ice tracks. I like it! I'm like a kid in a toy store..Christmas everyday here learning new stuff all the time!
Don't see any traction issue if tracks reversed. or design issue.. stronger/better the other way around?? I will post pic or rails soon.
Thanks again. great help!
Cheers,
Ken

Running the chain backward will put a lot of wear on the bushings and sprockets in a surprising short time. Better take the time to turn them around ASAP if you're planning to work it. 5J is a dandy little Cat. I got one, a 1941 model, in about 1969. That power plant hasn't missed a start in what, is it really going on 37 years? Have fun!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
