I just tried using the search function on this new forum for the first time, because I remember my buddy "Stephen" (Sarkany) over in south Carolina did a great thread awhile back on making new valves for his 30 using new valves from D8 engines, and as I expect I'll need to do this myself, thought I'd refresh my mind on the topic.

To find Stephens original thread from around 2 or 3 years ago, I typed Cat 30 valves in the search box, and got 30 pages of current and older threads, none of which were for the 30, or valves, so then I typed Cat Thirty valves, thinking that would help the search function, but this time I got 2 pages of old threads, but only one thread related to the Cat 30, but it had nothing about valves.

So then I thought, just I'd try Caterpillar Thirty and see what that offers, well again I got just about every thread on the BB, including quite a few on Cat 30, but it had the whole running conversation of the thread, all the posts included, so I thought OK, I'll find Stephen in the member lists, and pull up all the threads started by him, like I used to be able to do on the old BB, this will be the smart and easy way to find the topic.

Well that didn't work, for starters the members list isn't in alphabetical order, though luckily Stephen was there on the first scrambled page, but when I clicked on his name, no options popped up for searching his old threads.

What am I doing wrong, or are others finding the same problem when trying to search for old threads, because I'm starting to think that those Redpower nutcases must have paid off our computer experts to screw the pooch with our fancy computer upgrade......   If I could find a smilie, I'd add it here, but even that basic function got lost in the upgrade, this BB is the only one I use that doesn't have smilies.......
Thanks

Mike, I have had issues in the past also. Was told it was going to be worked on but was a low priority at the time. Have not tried again for some time.

Now , now Mike I never had much luck with the search on the old board ether. But in my dusty dirt farmer brain it looks like some whiz- bang programmer was playing on our dime. I surely hope the business office end of the "new program" works much better than this end. Some things like notification of having private messages, I just don't remember to look as every other place gives notification. (wink, wink, as the on board emoticons that are not here ether) I don't get many so I have not snubbed many by not replaying, I hope. Better shut up and check my PM, see if anybody wanted to have "talk" with me in the wood shed.

Hello Ray, I sent you a PM a few months back when we were talking about Cat 30 parts there in Paso, did you get it? I'm with you on the PM notification thing, not knowing easily is a pain in the backside, on other Forums they send me a email letting me know I've received a PM.

And yes, the old BB search function was nothing to brag about, but this new one is worse, though at least this time we have 2 of our best international members working hard to try and get things right, Neil and John Gaunt, thankyou for your hard work behind the scenes.

Has the search function for members old threads been lost completely?
Thanks

Even when you search from google and a topic comes up ,, if you click the ACMOC link it takes you to front bb page ,doesn't bring search up or topic

Mike, as you mentioned, some of the old threads had very good and helpful info, along with some good photos to go with them. Not sure how they chose which threads to keep and which ones to delete. Looked to me like some of the threads have had the photos deleted or I am just unable to access them. Sure hope they are not lost forever and the search function can be recovered and made whole again.

We'll have to put out a "how to search" sticky. It took about 30s to find Stephen's thread. The technique that needed to be used in this case was that you knew what the general title of the thread was "cat 30 valves". If you put those double quotation marks around your search term, then it will look for that specific phrase. If you type it without the quotation marks surrounding the phrase, then it searches for threads containing any of those terms, so it will find threads containing cat, or containing 30, or containing valves. That covers just about every thread on the forum.....
It's not that search is broken; it's that it's different. I can't remember if on the old forum quotation marks were needed to search for the specific phrase. It could have been the case that the default behavior in that search engine was something like "first look for threads that has that specific phrase, then look for threads that have a subset of that phrase (in the same order), then look for threads that have any of the words in that search term" - what seems to be the case with the current search engine is that it appears to search for each individual word in the search term. We'll ask IT if that behavior can be modified.
But in the meantime, if you know the phrase, put it in double quotation marks. If you use "cat" you will indeed get just about every thread because just about every thread has that word in it.

By the way, the actual thread was called "cat thirty valves" using the word, not the number. It appeared second in the result because the search engine also appears to sort the results placing the threads with the most recent use of that phrase first, and older threads later. Go ahead and type that search term in the search bar above including double quotation marks then hit enter. You will get this thread first, then you will get Stephen's thread second.__PRESENT

The double quotation marks are exactly what I have been looking for in my searches for info and how to's on my twenty. Tried it on a few topics that took me a while to find info and it helped a lot. Been trying to search the forum for info before I start asking questions. Glad you posted this.

Thanks Neil, I'll try that

OK Neil, so I found the old thread, thankyou, and hit the reply button which opened up the reply box, typed in a question for Stephen, hit the submit button, and a red warning flashed on the screen saying unable to submit because there was no subject heading, so I tried to type in a subject heading but that box is locked.

I tried twice, thinking the first time I must have screwed up, as usual, but no, got the same result, I'm unable to refresh the thread.

There is a old saw about this "you cannot teach a old dog new tricks".  Hopefully that is not true that both you and I can still learn new things.

Niel thank you for that tip will give that try on some other sites too.

Yes Mike I try checking PM ever week or so just because.  Hopefully I will soon see the right people to ask about parts.
