I looked at a D4 to today 2T8720W It looks all there, but has not run in 13 years but poney moter turns as well as main engine.
Seems it was painted green over the yellow paint

Has a tag on the 9ft.? (did not have a tape measure) blade "Lapiant Choate"

Questions:
What does the W stand for?
What year?
Aprox. Weight?
How do you find the history on this machine? it was painted green the guy told me that he thought the TVA had it at one time.

The man wants to sell or he thinks he will scrap.
I've been playing with my 22's for a few years but this is a larger project.

Thanks for any help.

I also have a 2T. 2T2451SP. Mine is a "43" model. Serial #'s for those go up to 9,999, so your's is a later model. The W stands for "wide guage" I think. That is the distance from sprocket to sproket. The SP in my serial # is for "Special Parts" I don't know what special parts it has. I think maybe different gearing. I'm sure that brighter minds than mine will log in here too.

According to the Cat archivist, From 1943 to 1945 everything that was built by Cat was painted OD green and was allocated to the military. Mine had a green coat sometime too. I don't think it was ever drafted though.
'I have a LaPlant Choat blade as well. Mine is a straight blade. About 6 foot wide. The pump is on the front of the tractor and the tank and controls are one the right fender. I am in the process of fixing the hyd pump drive sprockets and trying to get it going hydraulicly again. The tractor is running fine, so far.

I have redone the flywheel clutch and the pony motor pinion and have not had too much trouble obtaining parts "yet".Everybody says you can't have too many cat toys. I guess it's true cause I just bought a little 2 yard LaPlant Choat scraper at an auction yesterday. If you make the decision to buy the tractor, good luck. Keep us all informed and send pictures, lots of pictures.

2-22dud,

it a LaPlant Choate for sure. Looks like 4BX Bulldozer. There were 7.95 ft. wide (so the book says) the 9ft may have come from measuring from the bottom, dozer corner to dozer corner, would be interesting to know for sure. Yes the W stands for wide gauge. Would be 1945 with SN8720W. (we had at one time D42T8598 it was painted army green as well, with yellow starting to show through), tractor should weigh in at about 9,470 lbs. shipping weight for the 4BX dozer 3,130.0 lbs. Not for sure, but the front pump should be a model P-9-R for that series dozer,

When I was young, we had a "Green" one with a laplant on the front and a cargo winch on the back.
I only wish I had known my brother was going to sell it.
Learned alot operating that old tractor.........
