There is an article in the last issue about a boat powered by Cat diesel engines. The years listed and the engine models do not seem to jive. Is this article correct?

Matt: A good observation on your part. The engines in the article are model D4600's. But the first Industrial D4600 was manufactured in December 1937, so there are apparently errors in dates reported in the article.

Could be modified D4400 engines from 1936 but then they go on to say they are from 1934!!!!......makes for a good story though.

Noticed the color of my last magazine was closer to AC Orange than the Cat yellow. Compared it to some older magazines and the colors are considerably different. Anyone else notice the difference or did I get an odd ball??

Jim, mine is the correct color. It sounds like you may have received an oddball. If you'd like it replaced, contact the home office.

Regarding the engine date, yes, there was a mistake in the article. Looking back at my notes, I originally had it as a 4600 from 1936, but in a subsequent interview was told it was from 1934. All of the people I spoke to agreed on the engines, but not the date.

Just received "the final verdict" from Nikki at Cat Archives:
"The engineering model number E54 and the serial numbers 1N405 SP and 1N406 SP all identify a D4600 Marine Diesel Engine built between 1938 - 1947."
