Hello, I am currently going through my blade assembly as my D2 is now complete and I tore one of my cylinders down tonight to clean the decades of crude out of it and was going to send the rams out to be chromed but I had a couple of questions about the operation of this blade since I have never actually had it operational. The cylinder appears to be single acting, meaning to me it only has a forward facing lip seal on the inside. (leather?) Am I correct in that the majority of the force is for downward pressure and it lifts without the same seal type on the backside? Meaning there is just a flat steel plug with a level to steel seal of unknown material. I want to finish taking it apart soI can clean the gland and get things ready for assembly. I have made several leather seals in the past for old cylinders but this one seems weird to me that there isn't the same type on both sides of the plunger. Any input or learned insight would be helpful, Thank you and Merry Chrismas to you guys! :usa2:

If it's like this cylinder the one seal functions for both directions.

That's it. So the facing of the lip seal makes no difference? I have been having trouble finding detailed information about this unit. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I have searched the web and ebay as well hoping to find some published info. Obviously this diagram you have is from a parts or service manual I would imagine. Is that a Laplant publication? Thanks for your help!

Yes, the diagram is for a LaPlant Choate cylinder. Literature is extremely hard to find. Not that much to the cylinder arrangement and no parts are available that I know of. Just have to work out what you can using substitute parts.

One more thing, would you know what the gland packing material is made of? Rope, oakum? Thanks again!!! :usa2:

I'd use graphite impregnated square rope type packing, cut in rings with diagonal overlapping cut at the joint.
The one seal ring originally appears to be just a square ring. If your using a lip seal point the lip in the opposite direction to the leather cup.

Might have to do some measuring and looking in their online catalog to find what you need.

Another place I have used for odd seals is hercules sealing products

If you aren't against some small modifications:
1) a modern piston seal could be used with the existing piston that would seal in both directions.
2) you might be able to find V ring packings for the rod, just need some brass rings on the ends to convert the angled base to a flat base for the rings to seat on. Really like the V rings for low pressure as they last forever and can be adjusted.
