I am seeking information about the King Ranch Experimental Special Clearance Twin D8 that was built by the W.K.Holt Machinery Co.(Caterpillar Dealer) of San Antonio Texas. This machine was built by removing the left undercarriage and final drive of one D8 and the right undercarriage and final drive of another D8 then joining the two D8s to make a "super dozer" that had special final drives and suspension for additional ground clearence. I know it was equipped a special "funnel" blade that forced the brush into the center of the machine. It was also fitted with a special width Holt root plow. The blade and root plow were both cable operated. I have heard rumors that as many as three of these machines were built for the King Ranch in the 1950's. There was a super large(wall panel size) photo of this machine at work in the Holt Machinery Co. offices as late as the 1990's. It has since been removed.

My apologies to Peterson Caterpillar. I had seen the photo I described for decades and because of the signage prominate on the machine, I had assumed all of the modifications were done by Holt Machinery.

I am also very very interested in any info on the King Ranch Hi-Clearance Twin D8s built by Buster Peterson. I'm writing a history book and including all the Twins Buster built. So far I gather there were 2 at King Ranch, 1 Coal Twin at Lawrenceburg, Indiana (Tanners Creek Power Plant), 1 at Hungry Horse Dam in Montana, 1 for Morrison-Knudsen in CA, and 1 for Harrison Construction in Pittsburg, Penn.
Does ANYBODY have any info of past trade articles on these? Let me know. egrafton@petersoncat. com THANK!!!!!!

Not sure whom built it but the first twin dozer was reportedly an Allis Chalmers used on Garrison Dam. There is a documentary about building Garrison dam that I have caught on TV a time or two that's shows the machines and talked about the factory commitment to keep the iron running. Next time I see it I will try to write down the title.

Hi, OIH.
Here is a link to the video of the Garrison Dam job on Youtube. And there were apparently 3 sets made for that one job.

I have heard a rumor that Western Contracting also had a set.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
