I got the Killefer universal carrier with chisel that was the subject of this thread:

http://www.acmoc.org/bb/showthread.php?26807-Interesting-Ripper-On-CL

I got it to fully function. When it drops, it slams hard. It looks complete except for brackets that have been removed off the main frame located right infront of the wheel hubs. I'm wondering what those brackets were.

Also, I haven't had much luck finding info on this exact model. Anybody know where I can decode the numbers and find out what year it is etc? The history of killefer is easy to find. Info on specific models seems to be hard to find.

Hi Case-on-a-cat,

Here are two photos of my Dad taken by a roving Caterpillar photographer in September of 1950 in central California. It looks like the John Deere Killefer unit my Dad had was a little heaver model than your find. I hope the photos can help you a bit.

If you want me to email the larger photo files so you could zoom in on them, PM me with an email address. John

I have a pair of similar models with the coil shank chisels. The brackets in question have me curious too. Mine are angle iron slotted for adjustment, but they don't appear to serve any purpose! Maybe the Killefer engineers put them on implements as a joke of some sort. JM

Excellent idea Mike. I didn't consider checking in with the JD guys. It will probably be a couple days before I make it back to the implement to take measurement of the chisel. I would be interested in what you have if it looks like they will fit. Thanks

What's left of the brackets are mangled. I was wondering it those brackets were somehow used to deaden the blow when the implement drops.

The brackets by the wheels are for the trip mechanism. I think it's called a kick off plate or something like that.

The adjustment is contained it the operators manual.

An interesting patent infringement lawsuit concerning the kick off plates. Reading the summary allows me to understand exactly what the brackets are for, why they are slotted, and why mine are mangled.

Here are scans of a 1932 Killefer brochure with a little information about the 5G that you have. They might be unreadable when they get shrunk to be posted, if anybody wants the full size scans, private message me, or try this:
