Hey Kelly,

Well, she brought $1900...sold about 5:30...they tried again to start the pony, & finally sold it dead. Looked like a young guy & maybe his Grandpa bought it.
Strange though, when I left & went by out on the road, they had the pony running, & it sounded healthy...makes a guy wonder, huh? Did Grandpa just know how to start it, or did he know how to keep anybody else from gettin' it to run?
Those 3 dudes that were trying this morning just about wore out the rope...:biggrin1:

Ron, late on the reply, had company last night and this morning.

I think I meet them both, there were looking that old D4 over pretty close, as well as ask me a few questions about a 46A they are working on just before you showed up.

You could be right on your assumption on getting it started they both seemed to be machinery wise, I never give that a thought. I still think it showed as doing a lot of D8 dozer work, well wore. But, it had elec. start LOL!

I got there about noon today and stayed till they sold the starting engine for the D7…..which sold for $1.00 (one dollar).I visited with Max he was over at the Antiques, so I got out of there before they sold me. LOL!

Catch you later.

That starting engine pictured is off a early style block with the gear driven fan. Not very many over here and probably a sought after item in the USA. A true bargain . These engines although they look similar will not fit 7M 3T 4T or later 1H or 8R.
I am envious of your purchase. Dont loose the magneto coupling.

How do you tell it's for a gear driven fan only from the picture?
What is it that limits the fit?

Dang, I'd have run him up to at least 5 bucks on that, just on spec that I could resell it to Glen! 😄
I know where there was a D7 pony laying around for a long time, don't know if that's it or not...it was the victim of an electric conversion.
That starter setup on the D4 was something, wasn't it? Engineering by inventory, by the looks of it.
You should have hung around, those ol' gals that buy antiques will pay some serious money sometimes! 😉

PS: Andrew, the mag was there, it was laying on the other side, you can see the spark plug wire leading to it...

Hey Team,

I'll give the lucky high bidder 200% profit, with $3.00 total. Let me know...

The upside down maggie is the give away but I have found these start engines have a different bolt pattern on the mount. Also if the engine is turned over I believe you will find a single "O" ring type seal between the pilot motor block and the main engine block for the coolant supply. Later engines used a port on the front side of the block leading to the main engine coolant gallery . Another visual is this engine wont have the electric start opening on the top of the fly wheel housing. The carby flange is also very close to the exhaust. I think on later models this was extended to limit heat transfer to the carb. Guessing from the exhaust this pilot motor would be off a 6 cylinder engine.

Yeah, too bad I wasn't able to be there Sunday, had to burn ditch & get ready for water, plus a bunch of honeydo's...probably some good parts on that pony.
There's a local scrap guy that's always circling like a vulture, & he has no heart at all...he'll cut up anything to make a load. So it's probably history...

That would be a shame if that is the fate for this engine.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the pictures. What are the applications for this pony?
Would this be the 3-3/8" bore used on the Diesel 35 & 40 and maybe the 50 &75 3-5/8" bore?

While I have your attention.....
I was given this information. Does this seem correct?

Vertical Pony Motors
The Diesel 35 & 40 Starting engines cylinder bore size is 3 3/8 (Same as the Cat 10, same pistons, rings, valves, side valve cover). The Diesel 50 & 75, RD6, 2H D6, RD7, 9G D7, 7M, 3T, 4T, RD8, 1HD8 and the 2U D8 used the larger 3 5/8 bore, they needed the extra power, more cylinder’s. The engine block’s themselves are interchangeable on all the RD's, 2HD6 & the 9G D7, so it is possible to have the larger bore engine on a D35 & D 40.

The D35, D40, D50, D75, 2HD6, 9GD7, 1HD8 thru 1H2408 all used the same mounting gasket 2A2363. Beginning with 1H2409 and 7M1 they had a block assembly 4B3892 and different mounting gasket 4B4087 but pony flywheels with starter gears didn’t appear until 7M533 and 1H2409. (corrected 3/17/16)
