I know this topic has been discussed extensively; adding electric start to D318 (D6 8U). I know a few members have built their own jig that fits on the two bolts on the side of the bellhousing to assist in getting the holes started when drilling. I was curious if anyone had a jig they used that they would sell? I recently acquired a D6 8U and a D6 9U that I would like to add the starter hole and bolts for electric start.

Thanks

Auto-Lec? In Texas supplies a template with the starter kit; unsure if they would sell you only the template.
Here is a detailed drawing from long time member and crawler guru “Old Magnet”. This diagram has been floating about for some time, and nobody has had any issues that I am aware of.
Perhaps OM can chime in on any pointers.JM

Thanks for the info juiceman. I see how bad of shape the pony is on one machine but I may just convert to electric to reduce frustration and more money down the road.

You can drill it freehand - you don't need a jig. There's tolerance in the dimensions. I drilled my 5U bell housing freehand and it's fine. Just mark out the centers and check them twice and you'll be golden. Drilling the big hole with a hole saw goes surprisingly fast, maybe a minute or two

Thanks Neil, I'll take my time marking out my measurements next week and start drilling.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
