Well, almost - I haven't dug the 3J thermostat out of its housing yet but I can see the differences compared with the 5U thermostat. Pictures below - the J-series is on the left, still in its housing.
Cheers,
Neil

Thanks!
When I was working mine hot and hard last year. I pretty much convinced myself that mine is working! I need a larger faced temp gauge so I can see the numbers as I have a smaller aftermarket in there right now. I'm still thinking that I may replace it after I change the temp gauge for a correct diameter one this Spring. Just confused why it is supposed to be J series but seller states it came out of a 1949......

Yes, I wonder if something similar to those large-faced Sylphons are available. I know S-W make "old-timer" gauges but I don't know if they're the large diameter ones. I have the old Sylphons out of my 22 that I need to get to someone? to restore. The temp gauge needs a new bulb and line hooked up to it. It, and the oil gauge need the faces repainted.

There has been discussions over the years on a couple of car enthusiast web sites where they restore gauges.
One was in Minnesota.
There are threads somewhere? (Cars or Here?)
Gauge I want to put in is a Murphy, not correct but I sat in the seat with it sitting down there and could read it.

Jeff, your inbox is full. Anyhoo, the one on ebay is definitely a J-series to my tired eyes. The J-series has a retaining ring, whereas the U-series does not, at least according to the parts manual and when I pulled my U-series, there was no retaining ring. Which do you need?

I haven't had time to sit down and go through the manuals to see if on the U-series changed T-stats during its Production years. He claims that one is out of a "U"? Thats why I asked what serial number yours is?

My D2 4U Parts Book it shows a retainer 8B9828 sitting above the regulator 4F7059, and in my D2 5U1- 5U13236 Parts Book it shows the retainer used up till 5U11972, when they changed to a new regulator 8F8817, and no retainer.

Mike

Ah that explains it - my 5U is 13753 (or something like that) which would be after the retainer disappeared - thanks Mike!

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
