Is this a D25J ?

The serial number would tell ya for sure but from what I see, it's pretty likely it's a J model. .

It is cause the air cleaner is up front. Take closer pics of the control levers and stuff and I can tell u the year.

Looks like the Cat the GSA had up for auction in either Idaho, Montana or Wyoming-can't remember which State it was. Did you buy it?

With those wide tracks i guess it's a 50" guage which would make it a 5J model. However what differs from a 5U 50" ? Also does the engine in a D2 have a model or is it just a "D 2" engine, like wise the donkey engine ?

I don't own it, a friend emailed me these pictures and asked me if it was a 5U series and I told him I didn't think so.

I think Dozerman51 is referring to the tractor that was put up for sale recently, that was on some remote Govt nature reserve/park land/wilderness area .. and there was a sale stipulation that no wheeled vehicle was allowed into that area. The tractor was in a building on that land, and would have had to have been "backpacked" or choppered out. We were intrigued to know if anyone bought it. That pic looks very much like the tractor in question.

There were only two models of the D2; the J and U. Visually, on the J model the air intake for the diesel was through the hood as yours is with the air cleaner directly underneath, the U model had the air intake and air cleaner at the rear, right in front of the operator. There are a lot of other differences between 'em but those are the most visually obvious.

It's not a real early one but it's mid term up. They started making them in 1938 and ran all the way up to 1946-7 then came out with the u series. Well any way that one is probly 1943- 1945. And is there petcocks on top of the pony block and is the pony dip stick cast handle or a pressed tin handle and on the fuel tower is the fuel pressure gauge bracket cast into the tower or mounted on a tin bracket? Also I can't see in the photo does it have carrier rollers it doesn't look like but it might?😄


Where exactly did you look for the tags? Because there's a good chance the #'s are stamped on the block it's self and chasis right where the tags go if there're missing.
