When starting my D2 the proper way,I have the throttle in closed position, pony motor turning the engine, then engaging the compression release to warm up the engine, the engine wants to fire right away. Which tells me i am getting fuel,in a closed position. When shutting off the tractor,it sometimes idles low and then shuts down.Looking for help. Thanks

If you're going to a clear closed position with the throttle, you might have to adjust the linkage a bit. Also, check for worn pivot pins and clevises. .slack there might keep it from shutting down all the way.

I think I would also check to see if the compression release is actully pushing down the intake valves .In the released position the intake valves are pushed open ,and compression should be released where even if the engine is getting fuel ,there would not be enough compression to ignite the fuel. check the linkage and intake valve settings

Is your D2 a "J" series or a "U" series? There are low idle governor adjustments for both, but each series is different.

My d2 is a 5u.What adjustment would it have. My understanding when starting the motor, you should run it with the compression to heat the cylinders. When i turn the compression release on to have compression, it fires right away and wants to start, but takes a bit.Which means its getting fuel.

What I would try first is adjusting the low idle speed screw on the top of the governor housing. Remove the top cover (oval shaped piece on top of housing held down by one screw) where you'll find two adjustment bolts. The forward one is the low idle speed adjustment, turn it clockwise to decrease idle speed or counterclockwise to increase idle speed. The rearward one is the high idle speed adjustment, again clockwise to decrease, counterclockwise to increase.

Make a note where the low idle setting is now, then try turning the idle speed down and see if it helps. A properly tuned 5U governor will only allow the engine to shut down when the governor lever "cams over" the shutoff stop inside the housing. This point can be felt when the governor lever is moved to the lowest idle position then given an extra push to over-center the shutoff cam. I'm suspecting your low idle adjustment is turned high enough right now to keep the pumps delivering fuel to the injectors with the throttle closed.

I think this is the governor adjustment for the pony motor--not the diesel motor

This was covered in detail maybe 2 years ago. The low idle screw can be so far out of adjustment that the lever 8 does not pivot the spring loaded stop 9, and the fuel is not shut off. Remove the rear cover and with a mirrow move the governor handle to see if the stop 9 pivots.
