Hello!

I bought a 5J D2 in May last year having always wanted some old iron but not really knowing a lot about them to be honest. Since then I’ve spent countless hours reading old posts on this forum and have learnt lots about my new toy so thanks for that already! The knowledge here on these old machines is amazing.

I’ve got reprints of the owners manual and parts books from Finnings UK and the D2 is in pretty good shape really although the pony needs rebuilding as the flywheel is doing the dance of death.

Anyway, I was under the D2 the other day and noticed that the small spring (4B9290) under the main equaliser spring is missing. Not sure how I haven’t noticed that before but never mind. I’m pretty keen to get it replaced, I don’t really want the tractor rearing up on me any time soon.

I’ve found a complete equaliser assembly but the guy selling thinks they are off a 5U.. the only number he has is 8B9370 off the transmission case. My 5J parts book shows transmission case as being 5B5693.. so I’m guessing he’s right and it’s off U series? So my question is are the small springs the same between J and U series? I suspect not but hoping as parts in the UK aren’t too easy to find.

The small spring, 4B9290 should be the same for all D2 models.

James--nice looking D2--can't answer if the 5U small spring will fit but i suggest don't use the machine if the engine isn't tied down thru the spring and to the track frames.

Thanks for that Josh. 👍

Yeah, I don't plan on driving it until I can get the spring replaced and the pony motor rebuilt. I really don't like the idea of it doing a backflip on me or anyone else. And the play in the pony crank is unbelievable, its amazing the thing was still running!

Cheers,
James

Is the play in the crank up and down, in and out or both? if it's just horizontal play, sometimes it can be the end play in the outboard bearing due to a locating pin problem, it's a common issue, good to check before a full tear down.

this 4 sure!

When taking it apart, go to getting the manifold off 1st. When its off u can see if a pin is missing. U may not need a total rebuild, the pin maybe in the oil sump.

It’s up and down and in and out. The up and down is a lot worse than the end play. I’ve not measured accurately but with a bar under the flywheel, you can move it up and down about 1/8th”.

It’s also pressurising the crankcase and blowing all the oil out the dipstick tube, although I’m hoping that might just be a blocked crankcase breather.

I can’t wait to see what I find inside!! 😆

Good luck with her Sidewinder, luckily most the parts you need to rebuild them are still available off the shelf.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
