Working on fixing the steering clutches on a D6 8U. I figure that I may as well replace the seals on the tranny side and final drive side since the steering clutches are out. Looking for some help and confirmation on seal numbers. My parts book shows seal #3B8188 used on both the tranny side and final drive side but a post about 6 years ago lists the final drive seal as 2M5965. Did 2M5965 replace 3B8188 on the final drive side? Is a puller needed to remove the coupling assembly (6B9207) on the pinion gear side as well as the flange assembly (7B5355) - final drive side. Since I've gone through all the work of pulling the steering clutches, I figure I may as well replace seals.

Copy of post regarding different seal types is below:Ricky post=177232 userid=10510yes it is a big project, you need to get the left track off the ground by blocking up under the a frame and rear final drive, remove tank, and jump into it begin removing the bolts get all that you can reach, then pull on the steering handle and reach for another bolt and with a hefty pull the entire track will turn and then remove more bolts from the transmission flange and the final drive side flange once all of those bolts are out you can lift out the steering clutch assembly. I recommend changing the transmission seal and the final drive seal once the steering clutch is removed. these are the part numbers for my 1955 D6 9U19468 trans side 3b8188 seal, 2f2625 washer, 2b3908 gasket, final drive side 2m5965 seal, 2b3908 gasket, 2f2625 washer. my dozer has a winch which makes it a little harder to work around you will need a extra to help lift out the steering clutch my son is on my tractor with a boom pole while I watched and guided it out and then back in. check for shaft movements may have a bearing going out on either side good luck with your repair hope this helps a little, I leave the brake band on and connect a chain to the pin holes to use to lift out, just be careful once it is out it wants to dump over toward the transmission side just don't let it fall on you.

I would suggest you join the club and read the Cat Service Man's Reference book in the library, or look on line and buy a hard copy. The Cat way is to roll the tractor by using a jack against a track shoe. Only if you have very limited space to work would I think of the extra work you are describing as to just rolling the tractor. Yes you will need a puller. Cat used tapered splines on all the part from the transmission on out to sprockets.

I have a Proto 2 jaw puller that has removed the flange the outboard side of steering clutch attaches to. It was the bare minim. I cannot remember if I used heat as well, but don't think so.

Back in 1983 I rebuilt a 9u rear end, everything from transmission back was out all the way to new racks. Tracks came from a Breco dealer that also was into after market parts. At that time some of the original Cat bearings had been superseded. I don't remember which bearing and what was changed. But there was a replacement bearing available. Berco guy was very happy to have bearing that worked well.

If you deal with Cat they have a Vintage parts line that may have parts the main line says is are not available. Also some parts numbers need 0's added to the old number to have the same number of digits as current numbers.

So come on back with more questions as you work on this.

Serviceman's Reference Book D 6 tractor for 4R,5R,8U,and 9U series. Form 30027-4

A older copy that is from the R series days would have everything but the oil main clutch which did not happen until 9u 13xxx and 8u 7 or 8000 something.
