Hi All,

I am a Cultural Heritage advisor based in Brisbane Australia. I am currently doing an assessment on a Caterpillar Diesel Thirty Five (Model# 6E1887) and was hoping i could pick your brains for further information about the machine.

The museum i am working for would like to move it to another location. I am fairly sure that it hasn't been run since the 1970's so will likely have to be dragged from its current position. I am concerned that dragging it will damage it in some way. Is there anything i should be aware of, or do to it, before i attempt to move it?

I am also attempting to determine how many of these machines are likely to still exist in Australia. Given that they had a short production run during the depression i am assuming only a few were even shipped to Australia. If anyone has any information that they can provide me i would be grateful.

Cheers
Reiner

For towing you just need to check the oil in the final drives and transmission, and add a shot of grease in the Undercarriage. As the tractor moves the rotating gears in he final drives and transmission will lift the oil and distribute it. Here in Michigan we would also loosen the oil drain plugs to check for water.

The 3 cylinder diesel Sounds great.

Yes . That would be a interesting project for ch 18 to get involved with.
How far will it have to be moved?
Just to another position at the same site or on a truck to another site.
It would be good to do some preservation work to prevent further deterioration or it will turn into a pile of rust in the future.

At the moment it is just a feasibilty study but if it is to be moved it will be going to the mainland. The machine has enough of a heritage value that it will be looked after, so it wont deterioate any further than its current state. I already have a few companies that are keen to help get it off the island in its current state.

I'm currently looking into possible musuems that would like to take it on board, do you have any suggestions?

Brilliant! Thanks oilcan47, thats the first information i've received about there being another one in Australia. Do you know of anymore? The fewer there are in Australia the higher their heritage value.

Also can i ask about the condition of yours? Is it in better condition than this one?

Perhaps the 35 can be displayed with the Thiees collection when it fids a home.

Well if your worried about cultural heritage,My thinking would be , yes restore it but either return it to the island where it is linked . Or base it in Maryborough where the timber off the island was sent to be milled.Failing that , there is a sawmilling museum in Gympie . But dollars would be needed to go with the tractor to build a covered display area .
