This is my first Caterpillar restoration, and I need some help.
Tag on the radiator says D-4.
Tag on the engine says 6U71.
Spacing on sprockets is 60".
Caterpillar Rear hydraulic Control Model #41
How can I have a 6U with 60" spacing (would that not be a 7U) ?
Engine will turn over and I am currently re-building the pony motor - with all the parts heading this way.

Would you experts please tell me what tractor do I have.

FOUND THE REAR TAG (stamp) 2T6672W

Engine probably swapped. What does the tag on the back below the seat on the left say?

I can not find any tag on the transmission at all.
Top of transmission has 1F9139 in casting.
Gear Shift Housing shows 2F8626 in casting.

Thats a 1947 engine---the rear serial # will tell the year of the rest of the machine
If the tag is missing Cat always imprinted the serial# into the casting where the tag should be---look for the two rivets that had held the tag on

Hey William,

I agree it looks like a wide gauge tractor. It looks like a 7u. It has one steel fender not tin, and curved handles on the steering clutches, so not an early 7u. As jmvmopar stated, go to rear of tractor, left side up about 12-16" up from tow bar, closer to track you should see a serial plate. On later D4's they also started putting transmission group plates also. If the plates are missing, they stamped the serial in the case at this location also. I have a 7u with a 6u engine. The engines will interchange, so someone swapped out your engine at one time or another.

You've got a D315 engine (6U) transplanted into a tractor that originally had a D4400. Early model wide gauge 7J or early 2T with small final drive hubs most likely.

You are correct, that's what I was thinking but that's not what I wrote.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
