Hey people of Acmoc!

I’m a student in the UK doing a 3D games modelling project that involves the 1937 'Best' thirty caterpillar. My problem is I am having god awful time trying to resource high quality detailed images together, specifically the of the rear and underneath the vehicle, as well as the shape and form of the engine and controls. Naturally I looked over the internet and found interesting images but not enough to satisfy thirst in terms of level of detail.

if anybody on the forum should happen to own thirty series tractor, would you be able to take photographs of it, for me? Or could anybody point me in the direction where I could purchase a technical manual or exposed diagram?

All my thanks

Jon!

Byron, next couple of weeks is really booked up for me with course work deadlines, exams and exhibition shows. It’s problematic because i need to build this model all before these events, all because a member of our development team let us down. However if get the time I will certainly try to get up there, after all it like brownie points for primary research, is there a specific station I would need to get to? But I would certainly like to take you up on that offer if I can get the time.

The 1st thing you need to do if you are going for detail,is to figure out machine you want yo make. The 30 had many changes . there was no Best 30 in 1937(best rndend in July of 1925 Caterpillar carried on with same mackine until 1932 and made changes on the Cat30 like placement of airecleaner type of engine head ECT. The 30s biult from 1921-1932 we call the P&PS series. The 30 built bt Caterpillar in 1937 was total diff machine it was gas version of the D4 6G30 and had nothing in common with the early 30s looks or parts. Look at the many types of springs, tracks, sprockets, transmissions, manifolds, aircleaners and radiators just to name some of the changes

Hi, Jon Jacob.
As Willie said in his reply, there was no Best 30 made after 1925 when Best and Holt merged to form Caterpillar. The Best 30 was continuedas the Caterpillar 30 until 1932 when production of the model ceased.

I have a fair collection of photos of various configurations of both Best and Caterpillar 30's. If you would care to send me an e-mail at:
[email protected]
I will happily send you some of these photos. It is a little time consuming to post them here on the forum as I now have to go through a photo hosting site and I don't as yet have an account with any of them.

Hope this helps

Jon I beleave that machine to took out of the Joe Heidrick collection, you can tell that it is a early Caterpillar 30 by the grill, small idler springs & placement of aircleaner. Made in Peoria because it is a topseat and has rarer narrow seat. that ugly shroud between engine and rad. dosnt belong on it If that is the tractor you want to do then George Howard and Deas will have many pics of it Im sure as will others
JonJacob, I Hope your 500 Mile returmn trip to your home land was worth the Visit to catmans cat-land.. It was a Pleasure to help yourself and your mate Mike. You guys must of taken 500 Photos ??

I hope you enjoyed our Cups of TEA šŸ‘

I look forward to seeing your Project Completed.

Catman (AKA Byron)
Certainly enjoyed every single bit of the trip other than the return, we got about half way the M6 an blew a tire!Ii was half asleep at the time. Once we got the tire changed, we found glass in it šŸ˜–, but all is well. The following day, during our project seminar, our lectures we awe stuck as to the amount of research gathered.

Thanks you and all the photographs i have managed to get a rough outline, certain parts still need modeling, better topology and optomization in general. certain parts can be textured in with normal Maps and ambient occulsion. here is the work thus far, still a work in progress
