Well actually it is not home yet, but I just bought a 1958 D68U that has been setting for 10 to 15 years. The son inherited it when his dad died and knows nothing about it. Has nearly new chains and pads on it, and came with a bunch of spare parts(probibly a pickup load), a spare idler and 5 or 6 rollers. Sheet metal is all there and not all beat up, and both motors are loose, has a cat straight blade, and winch on it. I will try to get it started Friday so we can get it moved home. Oh and I gave $850.00 for it, so the scrappers couldn't get it. The worst thing I could see about it so far is the hydraulic cylinder shafts have the chrome worn off of them. Now lets hope it will run!

Good buy and good dead - one more scrapper that did not get to destroy another piece of the history of AMERICA.

It looks like that was set up to run a logging arch - is that the case???? - if so, is the logging arch still around there????? If so, pick it up also, would be a good combination.

Good save Painter 👍. .and good price to boot. I doubt that critter was ever used as a logging/skidding Cat. .sheet metal is in too good of shape. A typical logging Cat will look like a refugee from a wrecking yard 😆 plus probably all the track guards would be missing.

If the rest of the critter is in as good of shape as the tracks, you may have a real winner there as far as the engine/tranny is concerned. Let's hope so.

I wonder if that arch/fairlead would have been used for a can or farming implement?

Sweet find wish that winch was on my 9u that would look good with an arch behind it. Jason👍

The son told me his dad ran a sand and gravel business. Good to know why the winch is set up that way. YeLLowIron has a couple of logging arches, not that I would ever need one here in central Oklahoma, but would be cool to play with

Thats a Hyster worm drive winch, allot of line pull from that style for extreme winching. since its in oil field country, it was was probably an oil field tractor from a drilling company.

OK thanks,
Didn't they normally have a capstan on the LH side or was that an option?

Found it in the BruceOz stuff

Well after about 4 hours of working in the rain today, I finally got the pony to fire up. First fought with the mag, trying to get it to fire, finally took it off and was going to bring it home to work on it. after playing with it, and a call to a friend, figured out that the impulse was stuck. After freeing it up I got fire, then started working on fuel. With the pony running I let it spin the main on de-compression for about 5 minutes, went compression for a couple minutes, gave it fuel, and it roared to life. Sounds good and strong. Then started moving back and forth trying to limber it up, checked the steering clutches and they both work. It was too wet to move it around much,so I shut it down and came home. We are planning on going Sunday and moving it home, then I will start lubing and changing fluids and filters.

Hope you went through the water/condensate drainage procedure for all compartments and sumps before firing it up......otherwise serious damage can occur.
