Hey just bought a really nice d6d 31x1214 any info on year, specs. Anything I should look for. I would like to know how the frictions work. I’ve never ran a short stick tractor. It kinda feels like it applies the steering brakes if you pull them all the way back but hard to tell. I want to know how it works so I operate it correctly.

1980, according to iron record. Not sure on the D6 steering but the D8K's I had from that era worked as you mentioned. Pull the steering clutch levers all the way and it applied the brakes, not the smoothest system but it kept you from using your feet. Does it have a ripper ? Photo would be good.

Yes it has ripper. It’s a fire cat. Curtains and all. I contract with cal fire and US forest service.

That should be a nice machine, I had my eye on a clean 1979 D6D but it's to much $$ for my need. I'm surprised Cal Fire will hire a tier 0 with all the air board regs. Best of luck

Yes, the steering clutches and brakes are combined. I never liked using the steering clutch levers to operate the steering brakes as they had a tendency to be over-sensitive. The D6D will be happy either way. I'm not sure about the 31X serial numbers but 1980 would be close to the change from pre-combustion chambers to direct injection. You can tell by looking at the "start" switch, if it has a "heat" position it is the former. Good luck with your new tractor.

31Xxxxx machines are Japanese built with 3306T. 31X1214 is a pre-com chamber machine just shy of 31X1397 when they went to direct injection with Interum Scroll Fuel System.

Kinda funny on emissions but it’s good. Even good to use on the ranch. I’ll get some pictures for you guys.

Yes it is pre cup it has glow plugs. I’m gona put a cab on it. I’ve been looking around for a factory cab but nothing yet. I’m kinda leaning towards a panel kit that is custom made alittle heavier.

i had one just like that except mine was a 4X serial number. the steering clutches and brakes work together in the levers or on the floor if you prefer. one note at least my experience was they are overheaters if the front pulleys are just barely worn, and replacing the belt alone wasn't enough. especially with the curtains installed.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
