I was working 15 feet off the groud last Thursday, lost balance, and landed on my back. I have a compression fracture on T10 and L4 and a burst fracture on T12. The bone was 50 % intruding into the spinal cavity and pressing on the cord. There is also a fracture in my pelvis. Most of the fractures are minor and will heal on their own, but the T12 burst fracture had to be fused with five other vertebrae. I now have two titanium rods in my back and various screws holding it all together. These are all permanent. I'm in the hospital undergoing physical therapy and will probably be there a week. They predict about three months recovery time before I can return to full activity. After that I should be fine with some limited flexibility in my back.

Damn, I was so close to having the 70D grader running. I only need to install the crankshaft seal and radiator group - but now it will have to wait.

Sorry to hear that.....I was wondering if something happened to you with the grader when I saw the post heading....I knew you were getting close.
Seems like you have some good mechanics working on you...glad it wasn't any worse than it is. Have a speedy recovery. OM

Thanks all for the well wishes. I do have some good mechanics working on me. I feel very fortunate given the circumstances - almost as if angels were watching out for me. I made good enough progress on my therapy they are talking about letting me go home maybe even tomorrow. If, so the first thing I'll do is give instructions to others on how to get the seal and radiator group back on the grader. It will be a bittersweet moment having to stand by and watch others do the work, but at least I will be there to see it run. Here's a photo of the incision they had to make in order to fix me up.

Good Luck on your recovery raklet. Yegads it made me squirm just reading your post!!

Be careful and don't rush out too soon and pay attention to physical therapy.

And Catman you gotta be careful too. As we get older we get heavy and somewhat weaker so those 14ft jumps cannot be good on the system.

Good Grief!! Hate to hear about the fall but it seems to be a blessing you weren't permanently paralyzed from the spinal injury.
Hope and wishing for a full recovery but it will take some time.
God Bless!!

Raklet, it's weird how things work sometimes. I fell off the back of my loaded logging truck twice onto concrete from 14' up. Both times I landed flat on my back and both times incredibly all that I suffered was being winded (well, maybe some wind on the way down...). That was almost 20 years ago so I'm pretty sure that any effects might have shown up by now. As I'm sure you're aware, falling 14' backwards is far enough that you have time to contemplate the sudden stop that's coming up. I'm glad the OSH police weren't around to see it - they'd probably arrest me for endangerment to myself (but then I guess I could sue myself to recoup the costs ; )..
Cheers,
Neil.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
