Hello,

I'm going to be mounting a D4N winch on my 1953 D4 7U soon and need to come up with the gasket that goes between the winch and the tractor. The Hyster part # from the D4N parts manual is Hyster Part # 32841 which googling brings up zero results. But, considering it's just a big flat surface making one from gasket material should be no problem. My question is, what thickness and material type would be ideal for this application?

I've not purchased any Karropak type gasket material before but I've used the Fel-Pro Rubber/Fiber for other locations on the Cat with good success. The .031 or 1/32" thickness seems to work well for most things.

Would 1/32" be a good thickness for the winch to cat gasket? Karropak does come in .015" also if thinner would be better. The Rubber/Fiber is easy to work with, cuts and punches out easy. Is Karropak easy to work with also?

Karropak also seems to come in larger sizes, 36" x 36" I think would be plenty (though I haven't measured exactly what I'll need yet) and the largest rubber/fiber sheet I've located so far is Fel-Pro Gasket Sheet 3137 that is 18" x 36" which I think isn't big enough.

OR do I just put a bead of RTV around the areas that need to be sealed and forget the gasket all together?

Thanks,
Jordan

Looks like I also need to find the correct dowel pins that are used with the upper mounting brackets. I have the brackets (# 90739 and 90740) and bolts but the dowels were left in the machine they were removed from. The Hyster part # for the dowel pins is 38454 but not finding those anywhere yet.

Thanks,

If you know the dowel diameter and length McMaster Carr probably would have them

I'm going to do the same with my D2 Hyster so I'll keep an eye on whatever you end up doing

A bead of RTV would be quite sufficient for a seal, IMO. Just make sure the mating surfaces are clean and oil free before you apply it, and don't go overboard with the amount used, as strings of excess RTV hanging from mating surfaces have a habit of coming off and blocking oilways.
Standard diameter dowels are usually readily available, and can be shortened by cutting down if the standard length is too long.
Make sure the dowels are a good neat fit, and use a little loctite to ensure they stay in the housing they are meant to stay in.

Thanks, that's likely the route I'll go then.

Careful with shipping from McMaster - they don't tell you what it is until you've placed your order. I just got stung with overnight shipping for 20 clams for a $12 gasket sheet

I use McM-Carr a LOT!

I have a bad habit of ordering from them multiple times a day because I forget to add stuff to my order. Lately I have gotten into the habit of building up an order online and letting it sit for a week, adding things as I think of them, this helps to not get gouged on shipping multiple small boxes etc.

We use it all the time, they have to be one of the most efficient companies, and their website is one of the best for finding things. We have a deal with them for next day shipping from Atlanta no extra cost.

Oh I like them for their range and so on, just don't like getting shipping charge surprises. I'm not an account holder and when I buy online, I have to make the purchase before I find out what the shipping is, which seems bass-ackwards.

Measuring the brackets it looks like they should be 5/8" dowels. I ordered some from McMaster-Carr that are 1-1/2" long which should be plenty, they can stick past the top if they are a little too long. I also ordered some different types of gasket material to see which I liked most. I'm sure silicon would be fine but gaskets are cheap and easy to make.

I did some looking and rough measuring last night and it might take some work to get the older D4 style winch control to work on this machine since mine has a tank seat. I'll have to raise the seat up at least 3 inches and also possibly weld an extension on to the lever to extend it further forward 4-5 inches to clear the front of the seat/tank. Does anyone else here have this control setup with a tank seat with a picture of how you made it fit? I might consider moving the tank/seat back farther too but that might be too much leg room for me.
