Okay.….got the wire rope figured out and the ferrule as well but the way to keep the ferrule in its slot I can't find a thing on it anywhere in the manuals. There is a tapped hole for I am assuming some kind of clamp. Anyone have a good picture, the clamp or a description as to how to hold the ferrule in place.

Any help is appreciated...….Bill

I am not sure if you mean attaching the ferrule to the wire or something else. I have diagrams and instructions from a 1941 Hyster D4 Towing Winch manual for attaching the ferrule to the wire and it involves pouring molten zinc, which was a common way of rigging fitting end pieces. If you think that is what you need, let me know and I can send it to you. Grant.

The front mounted cable control #24?? I had for a while had a fine thread hole tapped in the drum and a bolt with an anchor plate clamped the end of the cable to the drum. My problem was the threads in the hole in the drum weren’t very good.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The ferrule attaches easily to the wire with quick wedges so I got that part. Where the ferrule and wire attach to the drum on the side there is a slot for the ferrule and wire to begin winding. There is a tapped hole directly under where the ferrule sits in the side of the drum but no way showing in manual to attach and hold in place. That is what I need to know.

Thanks for help guys......Bill

Haven't seen one in 20+ years but it seems to me it was a small 1/4" metal tab that went over the ferrule to retain it in the side of the Drum? There is not any load on it, do to the friction of the cable on the Drum doing the pulling.

I checked my D2N manual and it did not refer to any locking tab or capscrew in the parts list for the drum, which is where it would be listed. Seems like a miss on Hyster's part.

My D4E winch has a semicircular pocket that the ferule drops into so under tension it can't slide sideways back out. I wonder if the ears for such a pocket have worn or broken off?

I have a D2N at home too so I can check it too.

Mine looks similar to yours but no hole for a bolt anywhere. I had to weld a bolt on the ferrule and pull it out with the slide hammer so once you take up tension it's in there good
Not sure year date on mine but I have the serial number
One slot is for overwound and one is for underwound

Yes my D2N has little nubs that keep the ferule in place as long as there is some tension on it. The are not too proud, but they are there.

Perhaps you can build them up with the welder?

Thanks for checking guys.....I read several Hyster manuals and it appears the D4N is same as D2n when attaching ferrule and wire. That is , as Dan was saying , it holds under pressure with a couple "nubs". The D6 models were different in that there is a bolt hole and a clamp to hold ferrule in place. Also what was interesting on the D6 winch was there is a piece of round stock tapered to fit the wire groove not being used. It was spot welded in place.
Im guessing the bolt hole in my winch drum was an attempt to hold the ferrule in place.

I'll proceed forward and see what happens...….again many thanks for the help.
Have a good day...…..Bill

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
