I seen this on craigslist and wondered if I could fit this to a 17a to add tilt. Run the pump off the crankshaft still? http://kansascity.craigslist.org/hvo/4372195680.html

The #183 Hydraulic Control (72H1-up) is a 70 gpm two section pump and control system for the 36A4469-up and 46A10725-up D8's. The pump is meant to be driven off the rear engine power take off at 1240 rpm and 1000 psi with relief valve set at 2250psi.

The 17A full load crankshaft rpm is 1200 which would be a close enough match for rpm if you can arrange a drive. Mounting and plumbing would be a bit of a challenge.

Further check of the 17A with #172/173 (67G1-up) Hydraulic control shows same two section pump, pump body and shaft, 54 gpm main and 17 gpm second section. So it appears the 72H1-up pump could be driven from the 17A power take off.
The #172/173 HC does use a different tank and valve arrangement though so fitting the 183 tank could still be a challenge.

A much cheaper solution would be to use a larger power steering type pump and reservoir assembly. There is usually plenty of room to mount this to the side of the block where you can drive it off an additional fan pulley. I have done this on 3T and D7E cats. You only need enough oil capacity for differential caused by the cylinder rods travel. You may use either a manual or solenoid control valve.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
