I was given this tool and I'm not sure how it is to be used. It is obviously utilized to set injection pump lifter height, but as seen in the photos, when it is placed on a lifter properly adjusted to 1.736, the spring loaded center stands proud of flush with the outer housing... seems like it ought to be flush.

There is a screw on the side... is it to adjust the tool ???, or disassemble it ??

It appears the part number is 4B6022

Hoping someone knows about this tool, or has an instruction sheet for it.

I'm using it on a " U " series D2. Thanks, Wayne

That tool number predates the tooling information I have. Seems you are using it correctly but that may not be the right application. How much proud does it sit? Truck engines had lifter setting to 1.8301". I believe the screw just retains the plunger assembly. Maybe Josh can track it with his NPR.

4B6022 is the body of tool 4B6059, Instructions from Diesel Fuel Injection Test Apparatus, form 11238-2. It would appear that one of it's uses is to set pump lifters on test equipment.

I'd park that tool and just use the depth micrometer.

Npr is no help says it is a tool. The number provided is the body. The complete assembly is 4b6059. Could not find, in any of the service tool manuals.
Did find in military repair TM5-3040A June 1949 for D8 1h5729 to 9999 and 8r1 up. It says to use 4b6059 for adjusting lifters. In this application one needed a 5b0641 fuel injection camshaft indicator. Says to turn diesel to tdc, then remove hour meter and install injection camshaft indiactor and set pointer to zero. Then turn engine back 60 deg, then turn engine forward till indicator is at 17-1/2 deg. At this point the plunger in 4b6059 should be flush with top of gauge. If not adj lifter.

After Josh's reminder I found the information in the "Instructions for Caterpillar Diesel Fuel Injection Test Apparatus" manual Form 11238-3. My manual has a blue jacket cover.

The Servicemen's Reference Book for Fuel Injection Pump Housings, form 7272 has instructions for use of tool 4B6059 on engines of that era, including the 3-3/4" bore. Note that later versions of that same publication number do not include the use of that tool.
My WW2 manuals for the D4, 6, 7, and 8 also have instructions for the tool.

Good information... Thanks everyone.

I had hoped that it was as simple as putting it in the hole, and if the center probe was flush with the outer casting, you were good... or adjust lifter until it was flush. Oh Well, so much for wishful thinking. It's back to the depth mic as OldMagnet suggests.
