I have an old 17a d7 with two cable winch and only use one.

I was thinking about using the extra spool on my winch if I were to get stuck. Is this safe/ what if the cable broke?/ Is there a good way to contain the cable if it broke/ how much power does it have/ how about using a double block pulley at the far end of cable so there are two loops. How about pulling someone else out if they are stuck?
Also how about using it for pulling on trees. Either to pull them completly down and out or maybe just to guide and control by keeping pressure on if I were chain sawing them down. It seems I could get the cable much higher than the Cat blade so there would be more leverage.

Inquiring minds want to know!

None of the cable control units are very powerful, at least compared to a towing winch you would normally use for the things you mention. They are fast, but not very powerful. The second one was used for operating scrapers etc.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Cat does not seem to want to tell what the line pull is for the #25 unit, at least I couldn't find it in my ample literature. The previous model 9R ccu (worm gear drive) was rated at a line pull (bare drum) of 5,000 lbs. I'd guess the #25 to be about the same.
