I am trying to slow down the fuel in my D-8H(SN-46A-1516๐Ÿ˜Ž. Can any of you reference the page number in a Caterpillar Service and/or Parts Manual that gives this information?

Slow the fuel (lower power) or slow the engine rpm?

RPM will be a lot simpler
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

To adjust the hi and low idle, you have to remove a small cover on top of the Governor housing. It's located just ahead of the base of the fuel filter housing, a single bolt in the middle of this cover holds it in place. Remove this cover and you will see two bolt heads. the one to the inside, closest to the block, is for low idle. Turn it clockwise to decrease your low idle rpm. To change the hi idle, you would adjust the outer bolt head, the one closest to you. This one is also turned clockwise to decrease the rpm. Do this with the engine running, when you adjust the low idle, increase the rpm with throttle after your adjustment, then move the lever(throttle) to idle position to see if the change in rpm is satisfactory. Your low idle rpm should be 455rpm, plus or minus 10rpm. The hi idle should be 1400rpm. When adjusting the hi idle, slow the engine down a bit, make your adjustment, then move the throttle lever all the way back for max. rpm, to be sure the rpm is what it should be set at, once you are satisfied, put the cover on and your done. If the cover doesn't seem to sit in place, you may have to move the adjustment bolts slightly, the cover is what keeps the adjusters in position. Good Luck.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
